No Status, No $20 Upgrade Trick, Third Party Booking and a Suite Upgrade

The blogging world is full of tips to secure a suite upgrade in the hotel space. While upgrades in Asia are far more generous and worth while, many of us will consider ourselves lucky if we get any upgrade at all. But do you know the perfect trick for a Suite upgrade on a third party booking?

Check-in late. For a one night stay. On a busy night.

Aria Reservation

I had booked Aria using my American Express Gold credit card with a $100 credit. As I was only spending one night at the hotel, the American Express travel site had the cheapest one night rate of C$180. With the $100 credit, I brought the rate down to C$80 + the resort fee of around US$50.

I did not expect much when I booked my hotel. After all, I did not book directly with the hotel. It is a third party booking, and the cheapest publicly available rate I could find.

But I knew I only needed the room for a quick night before I continue my journey to Grand Canyon the next day. So, any room would be a good room for me.

Arrival into Aria

For my first time in Las Vegas, checking into the hotel was an unique experience. Typically, I would have access to priority check-in. Not this time. I stood in line past midnight for 15 minutes before it was my turn to check-in.

The gentleman typed a few words on his keyboard and said, I have some good news. Your room is booked in our standard King room. However, I have upgraded you to Aria Sky Suite which will be about triple the size of the room.

I was honestly very surprised. This was a third party booking and I just got a fantastic suite upgrade.

I could not contain my excitement as I walked through the lobby to go the private lobby and elevators of the Sky Suites at Aria.

I will now let the pictures do the talking. This room was fantastic. Probably the best room of our vacation.

Conclusion

When you do not have loyalty to a hotel chain, or when you book through a third party site. It does not mean you won’t get any suite upgrade. If it is a sold out evening, and you check-in late on a one night reservation, your chances of securing that suite upgrade has increased drastically.
