An interesting thing to do when visiting Stockholm, Sweden is Mamma Mia! The Party. For the uninitiated, the pop group ABBA are from Sweden and in addition to ABBA – The Museum, there is this party as well.
But what is it? Is it like the Mamma Mia! movie and the associated musical? What does the party part of the title mean? Your questions will all be answered, so be patient.
It’s Mamma Mia! With a Twist!
I went in there thinking it was going to be the Mamma Mia! movie plot done live. I’m extremely pleased to report that it is nothing of the sort.
The people in Mamma Mia! The Party make out they are the islanders who live on the place where the movie was shot. This way their story has a tenuous link but is not connected to the original show.
Mamma Mia! There’s Food!
Dinner theatre. Sounds old fashioned, right? When I was told it was dinner theatre, I really didn’t know what to expect. Well, food of course, but it all sounded a bit weird.
When you get inside, the first thing you get is a shot or shooter if you will. You’re then at a table either on the floor or on the mezzanine in quite a large venue.
Considering the ticket price of 1,355 Swedish Kroner (US$160, EUR130, GBP120) it is good to see they don’t skimp. The food was surprisingly good! Alcohol is on top and is standard prices so it’s not cheap with bottles of wine at 500 Kroner for example.
What’s The Show Like?
I saw the show in English which was put on especially for the event I was attending. It is usually in Swedish though I hear they do a couple of weeks in English at the height of the tourist season. Even so, the songs are in English and it’s not War and Peace so even in Swedish you will get the gist of it.
Overall Thoughts
Whether you’re an ABBA fan or not, you will probably find Mamma Mia! The Party to be good fun on your visit to Stockholm. Any fan of good food will have a good time, and the staff employed to wait on you are friendly, speak good English, are helpful and fun.
They are planning to put on the same kind of thing in London and I daresay if they do, it will be a success. It’s a good night out all round, even if it is on the expensive side. I recommend giving it a go.
