Japan Airlines announces order for 737-8. The order for 17 new Boeing 737 MAX 8s is in addition to a previous order for 21.  This decision supports the airline’s efforts to renew their fleet and improve fuel efficiency of some of their current 737-800s. The move comes as part of JAL’s broader strategy to modernize its fleet and cater to increased passenger demand in domestic and international markets. Japanese tourism has increased substantially post-COVID.

New Boeing Order

JAL will acquire the 38 total Boeing 737-8 aircraft through a direct order with Boeing. The new planes are all expected to be delivered by 2027 (subject to now-usual delays) and will strengthen JAL’s position in short- to medium-haul markets. These aircraft are designed to improve fuel efficiency, contributing to JAL’s sustainability goals. The airline will also introduce a new regional business class cabin.

Fleet Renewal Plans

This order forms part of JAL’s fleet renewal program, which includes replacing older aircraft with more fuel-efficient models. The airline aims to enhance operational performance while reducing its environmental impact. The introduction of these new Boeing 737-8 planes aligns with JAL’s commitment to sustainability and meeting future travel demands. Japan Airlines has also added a number of A321neo orders. These will replace their domestic 767s. Further, the airline still has nearly 30 A350s on order.

Conrado’s Thoughts

It’s nice to see Japan Airlines continue to renew their fleet. The Japanese airline market is so unique, given the number of widebody flights for short domestic flights (under 2 hours). I’m excited to see Japan Airlines add more aircraft to be able to grow their international footprint and modernize their fleet.
