South Australia is currently dealing with a relatively small outbreak of COVID-19. That resulted in a six day lockdown being imposed hair trigger fast. It turns out that one of the people “misinformed” contact tracing people, so the lockdown is now ending early.
International flights into Adelaide have been cancelled through to 30 November 2020, despite the early ending of lockdown. Once again stories are in the media of devastated passengers once again unable to travel.
Hair Trigger Response Within Reason
International flights were immediately cancelled in case the state needed the quarantine capacity locally. This makes complete sense, as the protection of citizens should be of the highest priority.
At the same time, it appears the outbreak is not spreading and that the restrictions were brought in half cocked. There doesn’t appear to be much reason to restrict flights for so long.
Comparisons, Comparisons
It is interesting watching all of this from the northern hemisphere. Seeing South Australia immediately lockdown with about 20 cases is admirable, and Australia’s remarkably low rate of infections and fatalities is down to fast reactions such as this.
That being said, there is one part of my brain that sees some things as a complete overreaction. My view is influenced by the out of control case increases we continue to see in the USA and much of Europe, so I see both sides of the argument.
Overall Thoughts
Since the six day lockdown imposed hair trigger fast is being rescinded, perhaps the longer international flight ban for services to Adelaide Airport will also be lifted early. It would be helpful for airlines and passengers alike not to have to cancel another 10 days of flights.

Yeah its a hard one to manage, and one in which the government will always come out in the wrong. Id say better to lock down and if necessary keep flights shut for a while rather than have the case numbers gallop ahead.
Personally I would not travel within my own country, leave aside internationally at this point.
Yes, there’s always opinions both ways… lock down too early, lock down too late… it’s all a matter of perspective.
