When the flight information screen reflects the retro BOAC livery

Attention to detail is something I really like and I came across something that I wanted to share. Flight information screens at airports usually show the airline you are flying. Makes sense, right?

These screens are known as FIDS, which stands for Flight Information Display Screen. Passengers use them to work out if they’re at the right gate, if the flight is boarding or, god forbid, delayed or cancelled.

BOAC Flight Information

You would have to have been living under a rock to miss the news that British Airways has painted a Boeing 747-400 in the colours of BOAC to celebrate their centenary.

Unexpectedly, I came across a post on Instagram from a traveller called Ross. He noticed this on the flight information screens at London Heathrow in Terminal 5.

Not only do British Airways have an aircraft painted up in the retro BOAC colours, but they have extended this to the airport. There is no mistaking which plane you’ll be on when BOAC is up there on the screen for all eyes to see.

This really gives a real feel for how things may have been had BOAC not merged with BEA to become British Airways back in 1974. Did I just write a whole post on a screen? Sure did!

Overall Thoughts

Seeing this made me smile and it is this kind of attention to detail I really like. What it does is add a little sparkle to the whole experience of getting a retro aircraft on your flight.

Hopefully we will see the same kind of thing for the BEA Airbus A319 which is due to arrive in March. I know I’d be delighted to come across this at the terminal.

What do you think of this? Non event or something really cool? Thank you for reading and if you have any comments or questions, please leave them below.

  1. Super awesome. There’s extremely little to like about BA these days, so it’s great to see something fun and positive.
