Ireland has just one train station close to an airport, and that at Farranfore in County Kerry. Kerry Airport is located within walking distance of the railway line, which makes things easy when going from train to plane.

People have said that it’s quite some walk, but after checking it on Google Maps, I didn’t think so. Therefore I decided to give it a try myself to see exactly how long it takes.

Train Station to Airport

When you alight from the train, you leave via the entrance in front of you, walk through the small car park and end up on a main road. Immediately in front of you is the way to the airport.

Pleasingly, there is a footpath alongside the road all the way to the airport. It must be fairly new as it’s quite smooth and flat, which is going to be good for those hauling cases. Eventually, you see the terminal from a distance, which is the picture at the top of this article.

Shortly after, you arrive. How long did it all take? I left the station at 10:47 and arrived at the terminal at 11:00, so 13 minutes. I do walk relatively quickly but I was hardly rushing, so even slower walkers should do it in 15 to 20 minutes tops.

Overall Thoughts

Kerry Airport is very conveniently located to Farranfore train station and it is an easy flat walk between the two locations. Anyone with a basic ability to walk should have no trouble doing this, even with a small amount of luggage.

The one big caveat would be the weather issue. There is no cover along the walk to KIR, so if it is raining you will get pretty much soaked I would say. Either way, you could always order a taxi to take you the 1.3 kilometres – it wouldn’t exactly be expensive!
