Delta Air Lines is modernizing its premium cabin serviceware through a partnership with Alessi. The changes will lead to new plates, glasses, flatware and service products in First Class and Delta One cabins in 2017. (Feature image credit: Delta Air Lines)

“We understand every aspect and detail of the travel experience matters to our customers,” said Robyn Klein, Delta’s Managing Director – On Board Services. “Working alongside the talented and creative teams at Alessi, a design house that continues to set the standard for innovative and unique design, we’ll bring to the airplane an uncompromising level of elegance and service that builds on Alessi’s renowned design inspiration.”

According to Delta, this change “comes as the airline continues to make evolutionary and meaningful enhancements to the experience it offers on board, including partner chef-created menus that reflect local and seasonal flavors made with fresh ingredients sourced from independent purveyors as well as a wine program curated by Delta’s Master Sommelier Andrea Robinson.”

Delta will begin testing the new serviceware in flight over the next several months with the intent of rolling out the new products in mid-2017.

My Take

One walk through an updated Sky Club and you’ll see that Delta is all about “modern” furnishings. Even the boarding music has a modern feel. For me, plating and eye candy for airline meals is not at the top of my list of premium cabin features. However, I’m an admitted pedestrian domestic business traveler, and my needs likely differ from a long-haul traveler that frequently buys premium cabin tickets. Little things like this can add to the overall ambience of a premium cabin experience, especially when traveling internationally. Further, serviceware has to be replaced over time. Delta may as well take the opportunity to introduce a more modern look to this part of its premium cabin service.
