British Airways are starting 11 new routes out of Southampton in southern England from May 2021. These will be operated by BA CityFlyer, the fully owned subsidiary that operates flights out of London City.
Since regional operator FlyBe ceased services, Southampton has lost quite a lot of flights. Therefore, this will go some way to filling the gap, even though it is only on certain days.
Southampton Destinations
Flights will commence from 1 May 2021, with Malaga, Palma, Florence and Faro starting on day one. Ibiza and Berlin will kick off the next day. Later in the month, Limoges, Nice and Bergerac open on 15 May, with Mykonos and Edinburgh starting the day after.
Will This Be Successful?
With the demise of FlyBe, it is possible these flights will work out. In the past, the BA CityFlyer fleet has been used on weekend flights out of other UK cities such as Manchester and Birmingham.
Even Dublin saw flights to Ibiza for one summer season, and I happily got on board the inaugural service. While all of these have been attempted, none have managed to stick around.
Overall Thoughts
I have nothing but good things to say about the BA CityFlyer aircraft and crew. They have delivered excellent service on all my flights with them, and they are my preferred way to get to London.

Brilliant service to Malaga from Southampton with British Airways. Just hoping it will continue into the winter
Fingers crossed! I think a lot of these routes might stay longer than you might expect – especially if they re used.
Never thought I would see BA become something more than “London Airways”, and even though it’s CityFlyer, it’s still a BA service. But these are trying times, like Southwest in the US adding over 10 new destinations this year, airlines are working outside of their traditional comfort zones. I guess that’s a real “plus” for the current Covid reality. Weird routes from the last airlines you would expect them from.
They have used these BA CityFlyer aircraft before, out of other cities. This is just the largest concentration on a single place since this kind of thing has began. Agree though, there are a bunch of interesting routes airlines are trying, especially in their pivot to leisure and visiting friends and family, over business.
Good news for Southampton- but less so for the North of England as all the equivalent flights from Manchester have been cancelled and sent down South…
Yes, I read that this was the case. I guess FlyBe’s failure had a hand in it and clearly BA think they can make more money doing it this way. I’ll be interested to see if it continues. Thanks for the comment!
