When I was researching my trip to Hawaii, I came across a curious thing. Apparently McDonald’s does a breakfast meal specific to the region, which comprises of Spam, eggs and rice.
I’ve certainly heard of Spam, which is canned cooked pork, but I had never tried it before. It is extremely popular in Hawaii, hence it being on the golden arches menu as a standard item.
My Spam Breakfast Meal
My flight arrived into Honolulu at 9:30pm and I didn’t get to the Hotel Renew until around 11pm. That meant bed around midnight and my plan was to hit McDonald’s first thing in the morning.
Happily I woke up well in time for it and walked down to the branch across from Waikiki beach. It was hopping at that time of the morning, so I got into the queue, ordered my food and took it back to the hotel.
Turns out Spam tastes quite salty and it is actually really very nice. I was pleasantly surprised by it and hoovered up everything on my plate. Well worth it!
Overall Thoughts
When you next go to Hawaii, you really should try the Spam, eggs and rice for your McDonald’s breakfast meal. Not only is it something truly only available locally, it’s a tasty way to start the day as well.
Have you ever tried this at McDonald’s in the Aloha state? What do you think of it? Have you come across any other regional variations to a McDonald’s menu anywhere in the world that I should try? Thank you for reading and if you have any comments or questions, please leave them below.

McDonald’s also serves a breakfast platter with Portuguese Sausage – Linguica for those of you in New England. I don’t like their version, though, and much prefer the one at Zippy’s. In fact, next time, give them a try. They’re often open late and I believe you can get their breakfast bentos all day, including the Portuguese Sausage, Eggs, and Rice one. Their Portuguese Sausage omelet sandwich is good too. Now that you’ve tried Spam, do try a Spam musubi next time around. That’s really the best way to enjoy it. You can get them at all our 7-Elevens, but… Read more »
Sounds wonderful! We did have Spam musabi available on a Catamaran we took, but I didn’t end up grabbing any – silly! I’ll make sure I do it next time based on your recommendation. Can’t wait to get back to Hawaii!
When I was a kid, I knew someone from Hawaii that actually ate Spam on a regular basis. It might have been a habit from a time there was not enough meat.
I hear it really only became popular during World War II, so you’re probably right to a degree as I imagine supplies were more sent elsewhere for the soldiers and what not. I’d eat the Spam again, it’s pretty inoffensive as a food.
Try it with short-grain Japanese rice or Calrose rice. There are fewer food combinations better than pan-seared Spam and rice. That’s why most of us in Hawaii love the stuff!
Excellent, I will do – thanks for that!
