With travel patterns disrupted, airlines are doing various things to help out loyal frequent flyers. British Airways reduced the threshold required to maintain status for some people and now fellow IAG stablemate Aer Lingus is offering bonus tier points.

Getting a little assistance to move towards the next tier is always welcome. After all, the whole point of a loyalty programme is to dangle a carrot in front of you, spark desire and keep you chasing the goal.

Aer Lingus Bonus Tier Points

As you can see from the e-mail excerpt below, people like me are being issued with 25 tier points. As a lowly Green frequent flyer – the ones with no status whatsoever – this is welcome.

Doing the maths, Aer Lingus are giving 33% of the amount required to get to the next level. Therefore Concierge level should get 350, Platinum 200 and Silver a nice round 100 tier points.

From a cursory trawl through those hidden places on the Internet where frequent flyers live, it looks like everyone is getting points. This is in line with what other airlines are doing, such as those extending people’s status for a year.

I like the fact people are not split into the haves and have nots. Hopefully the Irish airline is also quick in raising the status of those who might have gone up this month were it not for the crisis.

Overall Thoughts

Reading into thing, the 33% bonus tier points from Aer Lingus and the 30% reduction from British Airways lead me to the conclusion the airlines are expecting one third of the year to be disrupted. That’s four months, so we will see if they are correct as time progresses.

Throughout the pandemic, I have been getting communications from cable TV companies, utilities and others telling me they’re still there for me. That is lovely of course, but it certainly is nice to actually get something tangible, isn’t it?

What do you think of the Aer Lingus bonus tier points? Is it the right thing to do or would something else have been better? How about the amount, is it fair? Thank you for reading and if you have any comments or questions, please leave them below.
