In 2011, filmmaker, Beme leader and YouTuber Casey Neistat filmed his most famous YouTube video “Bike Lanes” where he challenged his $50.00 New York City ticket for not riding in a bike lane with a unique response video. Casey showed his viewers, along with all the media attention his purposeful pratfalls gained, just how “safe” it is to ride one’s bike in the bike lanes on the city streets of NYC.
It’s a great, simple video if you’ve never seen it before.
Now, we have the popular Russian social movement “Stop a Douchebag” taking to the streets to tag violators parked in bike lanes or otherwise obstructing the portion of the roadway for pedal traffic.
According to their YouTube channel (found here):
“Stop a Douchebag” is a self-described “Russian youth movement that attempts to enforce the road traffic regulations in Russia. — We do not fight for the law. We fight for people to think about the rights and convenience of others regardless of whether there is a police officer near them or not.”
The video includes another argument familiar to the Russian activiists cause when an apparant Swiss diplomat has a much bigger problem with being filmed than complying with moving his vechicle out of the bike lane. Bonus: the video has some solid cycling skills too!
