Frequent flyer miles are funny things, aren’t they? You collect and collect your Avios constantly for years, amassing a lovely balance. Along the way you spend them on flight upgrades and award flights which makes your travel much more pleasant.
In the past while, I have not collected as many Avios as I’d like and I’ve spent a whole lot more than I should have. It means my balance which is usually well over 100,000 miles is just over 1,000. Shocking!
Why Didn’t You Earn As Much?
Having family in Australia means I like to get back there once a year and it’s a really good Avios earner for me. This year I went twice so I should be rolling in miles. There are two reasons why not.
What Did You Spend Your Avios On?
Flights, flights and more flights. Did I mention I like to fly? The main thing I use them for is British Airways Club Europe flights. Coming up is Stockholm and back, though luckily a friend of mine kindly used his Avios for my outbound, so I just had to do the return.
Overall Thoughts
There are rumblings in the wings of changes to the British Airways Executive Club. These changes, whether better or for worse, will impact me in one way or another.
Hopefully I will still be able to earn and redeem Avios at a value that I think is reasonable. How do you feel when you run out of frequent flyer miles? Thanks for reading and if you have any comments or questions, please leave them below.

Well, I usually feel completely screwed by many of these programs. One of the biggest offenders is Alitalia, which is DEAD to me. They completely wiped out balances in a program reform. HA! Will never collect them or credit them again. It’s also the practice of availability too. It’s great that you theoretically can use X number of miles for a trip from Y to Z, but if it’s never available your theory lands you in your own place in bed not going anywhere. American Airlines is big on this list for international travel for me. So for me it’s… Read more »
You’re certainly a member of a lot of programmes. I’ve heard that about Lufthansa too and I agree it would be good to be able to get First Class close in. I heard about Alitalia – an Italian friend of mine saw which way the wind was blowing and redeemed his miles before they disappeared so he got lucky really. I’m really only a member of a couple of programmes. For me it’s the British Airways Executive Club and I like how it all works. I am a member of the Aer Lingus AerClub which I use to credit my… Read more »
Are you short on clicks? What a ridiculously stupid article. Seriously? The real content is you just whining about not having enough Avios, mixed in with not-so-subtle bragging about upcoming trips. Why on earth do you think that people want to read about crap like this. I mean, really? I find your blog immensely annoying and really wish it wasn’t on the boarding area, as they have other much better bloggers who actually post informative flight and travel reviews. Happy to give you some tips by email (included) if you’d like to improve the quality of your blog. Dan.
Thanks very much for the feedback, Dan. I write on whatever pops into my head and at that time I was lamenting my lack of Avios. While many of my posts are reviews of flights, hotels and lounges, some of my writing is just for me. If people like it, that’s fine and if not, that’s fine too. I’m sorry this wasn’t to your taste, but thanks for reading it anyway – I do appreciate it.
What a classy response to a rather rude comment. I don’t believe that every post has to be a review – I hope you don’t feel like your writing has to be limited by review content. “There are rumblings in the wings of changes to the British Airways Executive Club” >>>I certainly hope that it isn’t the case. Actually, I like Avios a lot for intra-island or short haul flights. It’s a really good deal when you can find availability. I don’t fly BA often enough, so I am running pretty low on my Avios. Pooling into the “Household accounts”… Read more »
It’s rumoured that the Executive Club will move to some kind of earn by spend model, as many other airlines seem to be doing. I’m hoping it’s not going to destroy my earning potential too much as I quite like using my Avios for intra-Europe business class and for the occasional treat on other airlines. I’ll need to get me a household of people to pool into – now what would be handy 🙂 Thanks for the comment!!
