Back in May, American Express added a new ChatGPT credit to two of its business cards, and for the right cardholder, this can be a very useful benefit. The key phrase is “for the right cardholder.”This is not a general ChatGPT Plus credit. It applies to ChatGPT Business, which makes the math slightly different from what many people may assume at first glance. Here’s how the benefit works, who gets it and how I’d think about maximizing it.
Which American Express Cards Get The Credit?
The new benefit is available on the American Express Business Platinum Card and the American Express Business Gold Card. Eligible cardholders can receive up to $300 in statement credits per calendar year for qualifying ChatGPT Business purchases.
Enrollment is required before making a purchase. With Amex credits, never assume the benefit will trigger automatically unless you have enrolled first.
How The Credit Works
The credit is tied to ChatGPT Business. That is the main catch. ChatGPT Business requires a minimum of two seats. If you choose annual billing, the effective cost is $20 per user per month. With the two-seat minimum, that comes out to $40 per month, or $480 per year. Since the Amex credit maxes out at $300 per calendar year, you would still pay $180 out of pocket if you keep the annual plan for the full year. The monthly option costs more. At $25 per user per month, the two-seat minimum comes to $50 per month, or $600 per year. However, the monthly plan gives you more flexibility.
How To Maximize The Credit
The simplest way to maximize the benefit is to enroll, sign up for ChatGPT Business on monthly billing, and use the credit for six months. At $50 per month for two users, you would max out the $300 credit after six months. After that, you could decide whether to continue, downgrade, cancel, or move to another card if you have more than one eligible Amex business card.
Another option is to split the cost with someone else who already wants ChatGPT Business. Since two seats are required, this could make sense for a small business owner, freelancer, content team, or anyone who collaborates regularly. If two people share the subscription and the Amex credit covers $300, the remaining out-of-pocket cost becomes much easier to justify.
How Quickly Does The Credit Post?
I’ve tried this on my own multiple times. After making a qualifying purchase, the benefit tracker updated the next day. American Express also sent an email confirming that a qualifying purchase had been made. The credit then posted shortly after.
However, for some cardholders it may take longer to post. Statement credits can vary by account, merchant coding, timing, and purchase date. The important thing is to enroll first, pay directly for the qualifying ChatGPT Business subscription, and keep an eye on the benefit tracker.

Who Is This Benefit Best For?
This benefit is best for people who already use ChatGPT frequently for work. If you use it for writing, research, coding, business operations, marketing, customer support, analysis, or productivity, then this credit can offset a real expense. If you are only a casual ChatGPT user, this may not be as useful. That is because the two-seat requirement makes the benefit less simple than a standard individual subscription credit. You need enough usage to justify the out-of-pocket cost after the credit is exhausted.
The Pundit’s Mantra
I like this benefit, but only if you understand the math. A $300 ChatGPT credit sounds fantastic. In practice, it is most useful for cardholders who already need ChatGPT Business or can split the two-seat subscription with someone else. The best strategy is probably monthly billing. That lets you use the credit for six months, evaluate whether ChatGPT Business is worth keeping, and then decide what to do next. If you have both the Business Gold and Business Platinum cards, the benefit becomes even more interesting because you may be able to sequence the credits across cards. Overall, this is a strong addition for business users. Just don’t mistake it for a free personal ChatGPT Plus subscription.
As always with Amex credits, the headline value is only real if it matches your actual spending.
