Miles to Memories (H/T) has reported today that American Express is offering an amazing referral bonus. Amex already has an excellent referral program. Cardholders can earn up to 55,000 Membership Rewards (MR) points per calendar year for referring friends and family. Plus, cardholders can earn up to 30,000 MR points per referral.
But cardholders can now earn an extra 3x MR points per dollar on all purchases for the next three months if they successfully refer someone. This special referral bonus starts today (October 1, 2020) and runs until October 28, 2020. All consumer and business credit and charge cards are eligible for this program.
What’s Going On?
Current American Express cardholders have some extra incentive to refer their friends and family in October 2020. That’s because they can earn an extra 3x MR points per dollar on all purchases. The extra 3x MR points is in addition to the normal earning structures. For example, someone with a Green Card will earn 6x MR points on Dining and Travel if they refer a friend. This is broken down as the normal 3x points plus the 3x points from the referral bonus.
Furthermore, this also works for American Express’ cash back cards and co-branded cards. These cardholders will earn an extra 3% cash back or 3x partner points, respectively. For example, someone with a Blue Cash Preferred Card will earn a total of 9% cash back on Grocery Store purchases if they refer a friend. This is broken down as the normal 6% plus 3% from the referral bonus.
Moreover, the friends and family who get approved via referral are not eligible to receive 3x MR points. They will have the chance to receive an excellent sign-up bonus. However, they can become eligible if they refer someone else.
All referring cardholders will be able to earn an extra 3x MR points, partner points, or cash back on all purchases for three months. The three-month period begins on the day your first friend or family member is approved.

American Express’ referral bonus is impressive. Earning 3x rewards on all purchases in addition to normal earning structures is a bonanza! William from Doctor of Credit (H/T) opined that “you do need to spend a lot to get value out of this new promotion”. But this is not necessarily true. The amount of points earned from everyday purchases (bonus categories and otherwise) will multiply substantially with just one referral. Anyone who uses their American Express credit or charge card will get value from this promotion, regardless of annual fees.
