This 4th of July weekend seems very different than many others in recent history. By now, most of us would’ve already been on our way to or at our destinations. On this 4th of July weekend, travel is bound to be very different. Just last week, I showed how the data is clearly pointing out that Americans are now hitting the road more than ever. Gas prices are low and other travel options like trains or airplanes aren’t as desirable in the short run. If you’re looking to travel this 4th of July weekend, then this is a handy resource you can refer to.

Travel Planning – 4th of July Weekend

Pandemics Explained has put out a very useful and interactive map showing the spread of Covid-19 in the United States. You can play around and visualize the data in different ways in order to track Covid-19 spread in the country. Here’s how you can use this resource:

  • Switch between tabular and map based view. I prefer the map based view as you can simply click and hover over a specific county. You can also switch between state wise and county wise view

I checked the data for San Diego county

  • On the right hand side, you’ll be able to see the 7 day moving average for 100k people. This statistic is very useful as it takes into account the population differences between the states
  • Each county or district is denoted by colored signs. Red indicates the highest risk level, whereas green indicates the lowest

Here’s how you can use this data. Let’s say that you planing a road trip to Southern California this weekend. You can simply select California as the state on the left hand side menu. Then, on the top right hand side corner, click on Counties to get a more granular view of the data.
