How the record for the world’s longest flight just got broken

Longest Flight

Coronavirus or Covid19 as well call it is already wreaking havoc around the world. It has sunk stock markets and caused chaos and uncertainty. However, the pandemic had one unusual side effect. Air Tahiti Nui just broke the record for the world’s longest flight.

World’s Longest Flight

In ideal times, we would have seen a great deal of coverage for such a record setting flight. However, in this case, it happened primarily due to the circumstances we see the global economy in.

Air Tahiti Nui flight was supposed to fly from Papeete, French Polynesia to Paris, France. Normally, such a flight would fly via Los Angeles. However, passengers usually have to pass through US customs and immigration in such cases before they can commence the next part of their journey.

Given the current flight restrictions, flight TN064 flew directly from Papeete Airport to Charles De Gaulle airport in Paris. The flight covered a whopping 9,765 miles. It departed at 3 AM and arrived in Paris at 5 AM on March 15.

The Pundit’s Mantra

Very often, you’ll see airlines celebrate such milestones with great pomp and show. However, circumstances were very different here. As the world grapples with Covid19, this was an unexpected new record that we saw being set this week.

In the meanwhile, airlines and hotels still remain in the dark. Airlines are set to go bankrupt and hotels are closing down. Travel industry CEOs and lobbying groups are already holding meetings with government officials about next steps in helping them stay afloat. In the upcoming weeks, I hope things get better for the economy and the travel industry in general.
