A few days back, I wrote about how American Express was automatically giving customers extra time to meet minimum spend requirements for welcome bonuses. Very soon, Chase also followed suit. However, the details weren’t as clear. Miles to Memories recently wrote about the confusion surrounding Chase’s actual policy while issuing an extension. However, Doctor of Credit then reported that Chase was extending this automatically for certain qualifying customers. Since I didn’t receive any communication from Chase regarding this, I decided to check it out for myself.
Welcome Bonus Extension
As Covid19 has triggered a global recession, consumer spend has slowed down. Small businesses are reeling. Many card issuers are offering options to their customers. On these lines, banks are offering customers extra time to meet their minimum spend for credit cards. I used the secure message option in my Chase account in order to submit a request.

The Pundit’s Mantra
If you’re seeking more time to meet minimum spend, then it’s a good idea to reach Chase via secure message. Calling in isn’t the best option right now as wait times could be really long.
Before you reach out, please note that it may well be a few days before Chase responds. In my case, Chase took over a week to respond. However, Chase granted the welcome bonus extension and added another 3 months. As per the original date, I had to meet the spend by May 8th. Chase has now extended the period to August 8th.
Have you reached out to Chase to get an extension in order to meet minimum spend? Let us know in the comments section.

Got a new AMEX card in November. bought airline tickets for April and May to hit the bonus. Flights cancelled by airline and refunded. amex says they will claw back the MR sign up bonus due to “merchant returns.” Called them and they told me to buzz off.
Hi RJB,
Wow, that’s bizarre. Did you try escalating this to a supervisor? I can understand that the clawback may have been triggered automatically. In the past, I’ve been able to escalate things and Amex has fixed them for me. For example, I was told I was not eligible for a bonus. I sent them screenshots and they eventually credited the bonus.
