Even as travel remains largely suppressed, we’re seeing a few countries gradually open up. At the same time, a few interesting welcome bonuses have also popped up. In a move that surprised many, the US also lifted its travel ban on many countries during this week. Here’s a quick recap of the top stories we covered this week.
US State Department lifts travel ban – removes ‘do not travel’ advisory
In a surprising move, the US State Department removed the ‘do not travel’ advisory that it had placed on many countries around the world. However, the key question still remains. While Americans can travel to these countries, are these countries willing and ready to let them in?
Banks tightening credit card approvals across the board
Over the last few weeks, I’ve covered stories detailing how two major card issuers, Amex and Chase, have tightened their purse strings. This survey only confirms those reports. Banks across the board are looking to issue fewer approvals and lower credit limits.
Chase extends recent changes to its Ultimate Rewards points
This seems like a positive move overall. Chase has decided to extend its ‘pay yourself back’ feature. There’s a good chance that these changes could end up being permanent.
Elevated sign-up bonuses on co-branded Hilton credit cards
As many places still restrict or ban travel, many people are focused on earning points for travel in the future. If you’re one of them, then these bonuses could be of great use down the line. If you stay frequently at Hiltons like I do, there are some really good bonuses on offer. For example, for the no annual fee Hilton card, you can get a sign-up bonus of 100,000 points.
Similarly, Chase’s co-branded United card is also offering a 100,000 point sign-up bonus. With the United Club infinite card, you’ll earn a sign-up bonus of 100,000 United MileagePlus miles after you spend $5,000 in the first three months. I’m not sure about the value proposition of this card currently as lounges largely remain dead. If you value the miles, then you’re essentially getting 100k miles for paying the $525 annual fee.
If you like Marriott instead, then remember that there’s still that 100k bonus going around with that card as well.
100,000 point sign-up bonus returns to the co-branded Marriott credit card!

The title and writeup are misleading. The U.S. government never imposed a travel “ban” on its own citizens, only advised them against traveling internationally. And lifting the advisory is meaningless since Americans are still banned (actually banned) from entering almost any foreign country.
