Review: The relaxing SkyTeam Lounge at Sydney Airport

a room with chairs and tables

Regular readers will know I was recently unexpectedly sent to the excellent oneworld lounge in Amsterdam when flying Aer Lingus. Well, it happened again when flying Malaysia Airlines out of Sydney. The oneworld lounge finder says the Plaza Premium lounge is where people go, but as a business class passenger I was sent to the SkyTeam Lounge instead.

Most people will head to the Qantas lounges, but since they are tired old relics I had no intention of doing so. Happily this turned out to be the correct decision. Instead of a heaving mess of ancient design (and that’s just the passengers!), I got to enjoy a cool, pleasant and uncrowded facility instead.

SkyTeam Lounge Sydney Airport

The SkyTeam Lounge is right next door to the Plaza Premium lounge, so I didn’t have far to go when I was sent on my way. I arrived in the morning and was immediately struck by how quiet and calm the place was. Now this is how an airport lounge should be!

As a big fan of blue and green, I was in heaven. Both colours feature, plus there is greenery and what not strewn about. There are loads of seating options, which is pretty standard for an airport lounge.

As the lounge is located nearer ground level, the planes are right in your face. In fact, a Qantas Airbus A380 loomed through the windows as if taunting me the whole time I was there.

Wi-Fi is very good, and the place was never crowded. So many lounges these days are heaving with people, so much so that it’s often calmer to sit in the terminal. Happily this wasn’t the case here.

Breakfast Spread

When I arrived at the SkyTeam lounge, there were breakfast options at the buffet. You could make yourself a pretty decent full breakfast if you desired.

I opted not to have breakfast and just had a little taste of the Strawberry Sago. Usually I’ll always try something I’m not familiar with and I really liked it so I had some more.

Bathrooms

The toilets are located past the bar right beside the kitchens. As you’d expect they are of a modern design and so all the things that they should.

Everything was kept clean enough and no hazardous materials were spotted or whiffed. Not much else I can say about it, and the Appelles products were appropriately bougie.

Lunch Spread

Since I was there past the traditional breakfast hours, I was also there to witness the changing of the guard. In a food way, of course! The lunch slash all day spread appeared and I was back with my phone to record the vittles.

Quite frankly, I could have sat there and ate for days. I do love me a good chilli con carne, but alas I was saving myself for the Malaysia Airlines satay. It all looked good though!

Overall Thoughts

Malaysia Airlines sends business class passengers to the SkyTeam Lounge at Sydney Airport. Apparently it’s operated by the same folk who run the Plaza Premium Lounge next door. Reviews of that facility are like hens teeth, which is why I was looking forward to going. Still, I was not disappointed at all with the lounge I was sent to.

Airline lounges used to be places which were a lot more calm and relaxing than the terminal. The popularity of that was so much so that now lounges are heaving and I raise an eyebrow at any airline marketing speak that describes a lounge as “an oasis of calm”. It’s just not the case. That is the real selling point of this lounge and I rather enjoyed my visit.

What do you think of the SkyTeam Lounge at Sydney Airport? Do you know of other lounges which are also not busy? Thank you for reading and if you have any comments or questions, please leave them below.
