Background and Booking
After attending a wedding in the Santa Barbara area, I booked a flight out of Los Angeles (LAX) to head back to New York. I had a Delta flight booked as it had the best schedule & price, but I flew United inbound, and had an interesting experience with a broken TV & lavatory sink on United. This Delta flight went by more smoothly, thankfully.
Check-In/At the Airport
Delta operates from Terminal 2 and 3 at Los Angeles (LAX), and the TSA PreCheck line was quite quick. Then, I was off to the Sky Club! I really like the LAX Sky Club, and I think it’s one of the best in the network. Great views, solid food, and nice furnishings!
Flight Details
Delta Flight 939
Los Angeles (LAX) to New York (JFK)
Scheduled Duration: 5 hours 40 minutes
Status: On Time
Seat/Cabin: 38E Main Cabin (Economy)
Aircraft: Boeing 767-300
Boarding
Boarding was scheduled to be 40 minutes before our departure time, but it ended up being delayed. It kind of made sense, as the inbound aircraft was 15 minutes late, and only got here 20 minutes before boarding. Preboarding started about 10 minutes late. By zone 5 Priority Boarding (Silver Medallion), they had to gate check all remaining bags, which I guess is a con of the 767-300 since the overhead bins over the center seats are quite small.
The captain announced that our flight time in the air would be a quick 4 hours & 34 minutes. Flight attendants came by to hand out headphones, which was nice.

We ended up taking off 30 minutes past our scheduled departure time.
The Cabin: Delta 767-300
Delta’s 767s are quite comfortable for transcontinental flying in economy as the 2-3-2 configuration allows for only 1 middle seat per row. I generally select one of the aisle seats in the middle 3 sections. The seat pitch is advertised to be between 31 and 32 inches, while the width of the seat is 18.1 inches. The legroom felt roomy and was sufficient for this flight.
On top of that, you wouldn’t know you were on a 28-year-old plane, as Delta has done a good job with the cabin renovation (minus the old Delta One product that is installed).
The seatback in-flight entertainment screen is quite good, with plenty of movies, TV shows, and games.

Delta has free Wi-Fi for Skymiles members, but it was a bit slow during the entire flight. I was using it on my phone and on my laptop, and it would cut in and out.
For food service, they offered $13 sandwiches and bistro boxes for $10.
Or complementary snacks included:
- Lotus Biscoff Cookies
- Cheez-It Original Baked Snack Crackers
- SunChips Garden Salsa Flavored Whole Grain Snacks

On top of the initial beverage and snack service shortly after takeoff, water service was provided in the middle of the flight. And to my surprise, the beverage carts came by an hour before landing for those who wanted any more snacks or beverages.
I used the lavatory once, and for such an old plane, the lavatory felt quite new, and I was impressed! It was also kept pretty tidy.

And, as a pleasant surprise, we got to the gate 25 minutes ahead of schedule.
The Verdict
Overall, I had a great transcontinental flight aboard the Delta Main Cabin 767-300. The in-flight entertainment & and the comfort of the 767’s configuration are the major selling points.
