British Airways are going to introduce new uniforms in 2019. This means they will be joining fellow IAG stablemate Aer Lingus in introducing a new look in the same year.

Julien Macdonald designed the current uniforms, which arrived back in 2004. The airline notes the new uniform “will form an important part of the airline’s celebrations for its Centenary next year.” The jury is still out on whether the airline is really turning 100 in 2019, but the PR department seems to think so.

Ozwald Boateng Uniforms

Quite frankly I had no idea who on earth Ozwald Boateng was, so I am glad the press release provided details. Not being British and not being particularly into cutting edge suits means he passed me by. The video put together by British Airways below is really informative.

Apparently he is known in the world of fashion as the the guy who modernised the traditional suit. Judging from what is shown in the video, he appears to have a really good aesthetic.

I like how he is going to create it like a collection more than a uniform. In this regard we may see a variety of different styles which harks back to some of the uniforms of the 1970s and 1980s where crews had multiple yet cohesive looks.

Ozwald wants people to look at the new uniforms and think the people wearing them look really good. If he pulls it off, there will be a lot of happy employees and happy customers.

Overall Thoughts

While I think the current Julien Macdonald uniforms are timeless, I am excited to see what Ozwald Boateng produces. It’s an interesting challenge they have, especially when the pieces must also be functional.

My interest is also piqued by the fact that Aer Lingus will unveil their new uniform the same year. They have chosen to use the same designer that did their current uniform back in the late 1990s, which is a completely different choice to BA.

What do you think of airline uniforms? Are they important to the customer or just to the people who wear them? Thank you for reading and if you have any comments or questions, please leave them below.
