Ever had a picture of you on a flight taken from outside?

What does he mean? A picture on a flight from the outside? Essentially, what I am talking about is a picture taken by someone on the ground of your aircraft and you looking out the window.

Sure, it’s random but it’s Friday and this actually happened to me. You can see my big moon face in the first window of the Aer Lingus Airbus A320 above.

How Did An Outside Picture Happen?

One of the great things about being an aviation geek are the people you meet. Through an aviation web site, I met quite a few people who are into spotting aircraft.

Naturally, spotting sounds a little boring. People with cameras taking photos of planes landing or taking off and perhaps recording which aircraft they see. Boring is far from the truth though.

Spotters are aviation geeks just like I am and it is always fun to talk about our shared interest. Add beer into the mix and it becomes a very social occasion indeed. In Manchester, there is a pub conveniently located by the end of the runway so ample opportunity for beer and photos is provided.

That is where the featured picture was taken. I had to fly home to Dublin, my friend Tom knew my seat assignment and I agreed to keep my face in the window through taxi at the appointed time. A good effort all round!

The Other Favourite Picture

I have always been jealous of aircraft crew who get to have their picture taken inside an engine. Indeed, these kinds of pictures have been part of airline marketing for decades featuring comely stewardesses decked out in fashionable uniforms.

My opportunity came when visiting the Qantas Founders Museum. As part of the platinum tour, you get a photo inside one of the Rolls-Royce RB211 engines. A dream come true!

Overall Thoughts

I did say this is quite a random post but I am sure some of you can relate and I do wonder if any of you readers are ex-crew and have a picture of yourself in the engine… or maybe you’re an aviation geek and have a cool unusual shot of yourself.
