Over the years, I’ve written multiple posts about why I love flexible points transfer currencies. They give you plenty of options to choose from and also act as a hedge against the devaluation of one particular loyalty program. As someone who has been in the miles and points space for over a decade, I’ve derived a great deal of value from two programs – American Express Membership Rewards points and Chase Ultimate Rewards points.
American Express points transfer bonuses
Points transfer bonuses can provide great value if you’re just about to book a trip using those currencies in the near future. With the onset of the new month, Amex is now offering three new transfer bonuses:
- Avianca LifeMiles: 15% bonus miles when you transfer between now and Nov 30th. Till the end of the promo period, the points transfer ratio between Amex and Avianca LifeMiles will be 1:1.15 instead of the standard 1:1.
- Cathay Pacific: 15% bonus miles when you transfer between now and Nov 30th. Till the end of the promo period, the points transfer ratio between Amex and Cathay Pacific Asia Miles will be 1:1.15 instead of the standard 1:1.
- Marriott Bonvoy: 35% bonus points when you transfer between now and Dec 31st. Till the end of the promo period, the points transfer ratio between Amex and Marriott Bonvoy Points will be 1:1.35 instead of the standard 1:1. However, if you have Chase Ultimate Rewards points, the deal gets even better. Until Nov 15th, you can transfer Chase points to Marriott Bonvoy with a 50% bonus, making the transfer ratio 1:1.5 instead of the standard 1:1.
In addition, Amex is already running a 20% transfer bonus to Air France/KLM Flying Blue, which is expiring soon on Nov 10th.
The Pundit’s Mantra
Points transfer bonuses can go a long way in getting you closer to your next dream vacation. In the past, I’ve used points transfer bonuses strategically to pad my balances before booking an upcoming trip. For example, earlier in the year, Amex was offering a limited time 40% transfer bonus while transferring to Hilton Honors. I transferred a sizable chunk of Amex points to Hilton at a sweet 1:2.8 ratio.
Please bear in mind that if you are looking to transfer points, the transfers are final. Once you transfer points into an airline or hotel program, you’ll not be able to transfer them back into your American Express Membership Rewards points account.
