MGM’s former all-suite tower next to Mandalay Bay is officially now named the Delano Las Vegas. It was formerly called THEhotel before the $100 million renovation.
If you’re not familiar with the Delano, the name comes from the Delano South Beach, the Art Deco hotel that in the early 1980s was transformed into a chic boutique hotel by boutique hotel pioneer Ian Schrager. At the time, South Beach was still a sketchy part of town and wasn’t considered the fashionable, world-famous destination that it is today.
Three decades later, New York-based Morgans Hotel Group has the rights to the Delano name and is trying to turn it into a luxury lifestyle brand.
Hanging the “Delano” sign on the top of the tower on the Las Vegas Strip is a good step forward to that goal, although it remains to be seen if consumers vote with their wallets. The Las Vegas Sun has a story about the hotel today.
