Can you guess the airline just by looking at an inflight meal picture?

a tray with food on it

People sometimes remark that all airlines are largely similar. The same seats, same food, same service… the only real difference being the accents of the cabin crew. Personally, I think there is quite a bit of differentiation, especially when it comes to the food.

A lot of the time, especially in premium classes, the meal is a reflection of the airline and the country it is from. Therefore, I think it might be fun to see if anyone can guess an airline just by looking at a picture of an onboard meal. I imagine hardcore frequent flyers who have experienced many airlines will do well here. Will you?

Guess The Airline

There are five pictures below. The only hint I will give you is that the meals come from a variety of airlines, one from each of the three major alliances, and two from unaligned carriers.

Right, have you managed to guess any? Some are quite distinctive and some are not. Both short haul and long haul meals are represented of course, which you can tell from the vast difference between meal three and meal five, for instance.

Overall Thoughts

Of course, if you can guess all five of those, there is a bonus point for guessing the airline at the top of this article. I know that if I was playing this game, I probably wouldn’t do very well… then again, since they’re all carriers I’ve flown with, perhaps I would do alright.

Airline meals are pretty distinctive in my book. From the shape of the plates to the specific design choices, they all reflect the individuality of the company.

Have you guessed any then? If so, drop your answers into the comments below and I’ll let you know if any are correct. Thank you for reading and good luck!

  1. Yes, it took some heavy thinking on RJ. The pita bread led me to a ME carrier and then realized the single seat had to be an RJ (regional jet), so it must be an RJ RJ. Assumed #2 was either BA (old style) or KL due to the decorative design on the box. But, the vertical paneling and only 2nseat pockets on the bulkhead were causing confusion. Can’t see curvature of the bulkhead, so assume it’s a twin aisle aircraft? Do you remember which type?

  2. #4 is RJ (Royal Jord) and #5 is LX. The one at the top of the article is CX. #2 is a challenge as it appears to be a business class meal by a European carrier. But the seats might be 2-2 rather than a narrowbody 3-3, so I’m thinking it’s an old KLM 767? But, I think #1 is AF or AZ. So #2 must be a European charter carrier? Great game!

    1. Some pretty good deductions there, John! The one at the top of the article is Cathay Pacific. In the article itself, the five are – Aer Lingus business class with the beetroot plate, KLM business class in Europe, with the sandwich on a stick (on an Embraer by the way), the third one is Ryanair, fourth one is Royal Jordanian (you’re the only person to get that!) and finally you’re right, Swiss for the last one. Nice work!!! I thought no-one would get RJ, so I’m pretty impressed!

  3. I fly business/first United Airlines exclusively, and I don’t think any of the pictured meals are United.

    1. Correct!!! 🙂 The top of the article is Cathay Pacific, then the five are – Aer Lingus business class transatlantic, KLM business class in Europe, Ryanair buy on board, Royal Jordanian business class and finally Swiss business class in Europe. Next time I’ll have to do an all US airlines edition, I think!

    1. Sorry, the second one is KLM business class on a Dublin to Amsterdam service. The top one in the article is Cathay Pacific, then the five in the article are Aer Lingus, KLM, Ryanair, Royal Jordanian and Swiss. Thanks for giving it a go!

  4. Since I haven’t flown a non-US airline in several years, I’ll guess that none of them are AA,DL,UA,AS or HA. Can’t wait for the reveal!

    1. Haha! Correct!! I guess half a point for the eliminations? 🙂 Anyway, the top of the article is Cathay Pacific, then the five are – Aer Lingus business class transatlantic, KLM business class in Europe, Ryanair buy on board, Royal Jordanian business class and finally Swiss business class in Europe. Next time, a US airlines edition for sure, I think!

    1. Correct, three is Ryanair. Four is actually Royal Jordanian – though you’re on the right track. The bread helps give it away!

    1. Correct, five is Swiss! The only ones you missed are number one being Aer Lingus and number two being KLM. Oh, and the one at the top, which is Cathay Pacific. Thanks for joining in!

  5. Well 3 is clearly Ryanair . Is 1 BA? I think 2 looks like KLM. 4 has me stumped. Is 5 Swiss by any chance?

      1. And you’re the only one who got Aer Lingus correct! The only one you missed was number four, which is Royal Jordanian. And of course the one at the top of the article for the bonus, which is Cathay Pacific. That means four out of six, which is equal highest, so well done!! 🙂
