I flew from OR Tambo airport in Johannesburg to George airport in the Western Cape. It is about a 2 hour flight.
George is the second biggest city in the Western Cape Province after Cape Town and is a prime holiday destination in summer. It is also the center of the Garden Route, and there are 2 main beaches, Herholdts Bay and Victoria Bay which is known for great surfing.
On approaching the airport I first saw George mountain, a large peak that sits inland from the city.
Here is a view of the peak from near the sea.
Herholdts Bay is the beach that is right near the airport and we flew directly over it on approach.
This is a lovely place to stay during summer. Being able to go to the beach every day is great.
On the right of the last aerial picture you can see a golf course. That is Oubaai course which is an Ernie Els championship course.
Here is a picture of the beach from one of the apartments available. (With thanks to Tracks4Africa for this pic)
On approaching George airport I was able to get these great shots of the airport layout.
It is a single runway airport which mainly hosts Boeing 737s and similar sized aircraft.
This is a shot of the airport building on arriving.
This picture shows the George mountain in the background to the airport building.
This was an introduction to George airport and its surrounds. Car rental is within walking distance right across the road from the airport exit, it takes less than 15 minutes to get to downtown George and Herholdts Bay is 5 minutes drive from the airport.
Anyone who visits South Africa with Pounds, Euros, Dollars, Yen and some other currencies will get great value for their money as the exchange rate is greatly in their favor.
I hope some of you will visit in the near future.
Flying into George Airport in South Africa is a fantastic experience! Nestled between the majestic Outeniqua Mountains and the Indian Ocean, the scenic approach offers breathtaking views of lush landscapes and dramatic coastlines. The airport itself is small but well-organized, with friendly staff and a relaxed atmosphere. It’s a gateway to the stunning Garden Route, making it the perfect starting point for exploring this beautiful region. Whether you’re heading to the beaches of Wilderness or the forests of Knysna, landing in George sets the tone for an unforgettable South African adventure!
Thank you Yohan, I couldn’t have said it better myself.
