What are these cranes building at Dublin Airport?

The Flight Detective

A couple of cranes have started building something at Dublin Airport Terminal 2. There is nothing to really state what is happening on the site, but it is right across from the terminal.

Those concerned about the flight path need not worry, as these are quite out of the way of that. So, what are they doing? Is it some kind of extension? A glamorous multi-story car park? Well…

The Cranes Are Building A Hotel

There has always been a plan for a hotel at Terminal 2, and while that has been open for well over a decade, the hotel project did not proceed. Happily this seems to have changed.

Arora group is spending €100 million to build a Sofitel at Dublin Airport, which will have 412 rooms. It will be the first and only hotel connected to an airport terminal in Ireland’s capital. Since you can move between terminals both landside and airside, it means people will be able to get to the hotel, avoiding the weather. That is sure to gladden the heart of anyone who has a flight cancelled on a windy and wet night in future!

Overall Thoughts

Dublin Airport put out a press release about this back in May 2021, so it’s taken another three years for them to break ground. The new building is expected to open for business sometime in 2026.

The existing two airport hotels, a Radisson and a Maldron will be watching this closely. It will be interesting to see if there is enough demand for all three, but I’d say there is as it’s a very busy airport indeed.

What do you think of the building of this new Sofitel at Dublin Airport? Thank you for reading and if you have any comments or questions, please leave them below.

Great article. This’ll be a great resource to anyone flying to Dublin to utilise US-Preclearance. What do you think about Aer Lingus’ new route to Nashville? What products will you be reviewing as part of your Billund day trip? When will you be reviewing EgyptAir?

Dublin is the worst place to fly to the US. Crowded airport, no place to sit down, no lounge after preclearance. Even Midway is better. Only positive is that flights are short to East coast US..
