I’m always on the lookout for new data or research reports in order to observe ongoing travel trends as we all navigate the complex web of Covid-19 travel restrictions. Since the Covid-19 outbreak, we’ve all been looking for a glimmer of hope in terms of hoping for any normalcy on the horizon for the travel industry. Over the last few months, travel restrictions and regulations have indeed become the norm. However, is this popular travel destination bucking the trend? Will tourists flock to this destination right after it lifts travel restrictions? Let’s have a look.

Covid-19 Travel Restrictions
Travel Daily Media reports the findings published by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). The agency assigns numerical scores to countries and their Covid-19 response based on a myriad of factors. Germany based travel company Tourlane listed Thailand at the top with a score of 85.
Thailand was considered the world’s safest travel destination during the COVID-19 pandemic based on various criteria including the 14-day notification rate of new COVID-19 cases and deaths per the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), International Health Regulations score, population density of the country, hours of sunshine per day for outdoor activities, and flight connections with Germany.
Thailand continues to be one the countries that has had steady Covid-19 case numbers. The report cites that Thailand hasn’t reported a new Covid-19 cases for the last 86 days and travel restrictions continue to be in place.

The Pundit’s Mantra
In spite of the promising numbers, travel to Thailand continues to be restricted. However, I’ll be interested to see if international tourists will flock to Thailand once it opens up completely for tourists.
On the contrary, any sort of reopening may take longer than expected. Even though Thailand has the case numbers under control, it will continue to monitor case numbers of countries from that tourists frequently visit from. We’ve seen Hawaii take a similar approach where they’ve extended travel restrictions in response to surging case numbers on the US mainland.
