New uniforms have been on the cards for British Airways staff for quite a long time now. In fact, I wrote about it back in September 2018 and at that time the launch was expected to be in 2019.
That was delayed and then a small thing called the pandemic happened, putting the brakes on everything. Anyway, the news is that the uniform is due imminently and here are the details.
New Uniforms
According to the British Airways press release, engineers and ground operations agents will wear the new uniforms from Spring 2023. Cabin Crew and Pilots will follow in summer, so it’s not very far away.
The designer is Ozwald Boateng, known for designing menswear, who has a store on Saville Row in London. There seems to be a lot of focus on texture, according to the video below. I must say the close ups make the elements look rather delicious.
Apparently 1,500 staff members were involved in trials of the new uniforms, suggesting adjustments and improvements before the final designs were settled on. Considering it is essentially work wear, this is quite important.
Sustainability has been considered as well, of course. 90% of the garments are produced using sustainable fabric. The existing Julien MacDonald uniforms, which were introduced in 2004, will also be recycled as BA people will be asked to hand them back in.
Overall Thoughts
It is great that British Airways crews are getting new uniforms. They look quite nice from what we can see so far, though you can never really tell what they will be like until you see it in the flesh.
Hopefully there will be no issues with the introduction or look, as it’s likely the garments will be representing the oneworld alliance carrier for many years to come. I’m looking forward to seeing it!
