Aer Lingus are offering 50% bonus AerClub Avios for purchase – is it worth it?

Aer Lingus are offering bonus AerClub Avios, where you get 50% extra with your purchase. Since you can purchase up to 200,000 Avios, this means you could get up to 100,000 Avios for free. You have until 18 May to buy them.

Obviously with nobody flying right now, there isn’t much you can do with your points. Once restrictions are lifted, you might have a use for these, so is it worth it to buy now?

Bonus AerClub Avios – Pros and Cons

Once upon a time, you earned your frequent flyer miles from flying. Not anymore though! You can earn miles on credit card, every day spending in supermarkets and a whole host of other ways. The ecosystem is comprehensive and airlines can make a pretty penny from their loyalty programmes.

Aer Lingus are part of a group of airlines that are considered to be financially strong enough to survive. That means purchasing frequent flyer points is not particularly risky. There should be an airline around to use them on once flying commences properly again.

The 50% bonus being offered is as good as it gets. These offers come around every year and it’s always the same, so the current promotion is nothing special. You are restricted to buying 200,000 Avios annually, and in this promotion the number is being reset, so if you’ve already made a purchase it won’t count towards the limit.

Either way, I’m not one to purchase Avios routinely. I have done it just once when I needed a quick top up of 1,000 to make up the amount for a reward, or when there was a discount as well as a bonus, meaning it would be silly not to make a purchase. This isn’t one of those instances. If I had a specific requirement, I would purchase, but as I don’t, there’s no reason to.

Overall Thoughts

I’m yet to meet someone who would regularly buy Avios. Why do that when you can get them for free via a multitude of channels? Even though Ireland doesn’t allow as many earning options as those enjoyed by frequent flyers in the United States or United Kingdom, you can still do fairly well if you pay attention.

There really isn’t any compelling reason to purchase Avios at this rate. If it were at a 100% bonus or the Avios were discounted by 25-50% as well as the bonus, then I would probably have to give serious consideration to dropping a bunch of money on it. As it is, it’s a no from me.

What do you think of the bonus AerClub Avios offer? Have you ever purchased frequent flyer points? Why did you do that? Thank you for reading and if you have any comments or questions, please leave them below.

There’s a 75% bonus if you hold the Aer Credit Card. But I still think it represents bad value for money.
