Aer Lingus clearly has the best economy class breakfast in the world

When you’re onto a winner, stick to it, as the old saying goes. Aer Lingus serve an Irish Breakfast on European flights, which has to be the best economy class breakfast in the sky.

Over the years, the only changing aspect has been the price. It is currently available for purchase for €10.00 and you will agree it is a substantial amount of food for your buck.

Airbus A320 – EI-DEE – St. Ultan
Seat: Economy 3A
Departure: 10:05 Arrival: 12:45

Breakfast is available through to 11am and it is all I wanted for Christmas from the Irish airline. Everything was on time and soon enough we were in the air.

Seat Choices For A Reason

I generally always sit in 3A or 3F on Aer Lingus for a couple of reasons. First, the window is aligned nicely so there is no craning of the head to see out.

Secondly, and most importantly, the cabin crew serve you almost instantly. This means you are more likely to have your choice of meal, rather than finding they’ve run out.

A Near Miss

When the cabin crew arrived at my seat, I happily ordered a breakfast. A frown. They are not sure if any are left. A quick call to the rear galley where they discover there is one up front in a container locker. Do they have a box to go with it? Yes. Success!

Since it was not already in the oven, I was advised it would be 15 minutes to heat up. Would I like something else in the meantime? No thanks, I was perfectly happy to wait for it as I knew what I was in store for. I could sip my latte while waiting.

The Best Economy Class Breakfast In The Sky

Soon enough, my dish is hot and I am presented the box with a flourish. This is an Aer Lingus Irish Breakfast baby and it’s time to tuck into the goodness!

What do you get? A cup of orange juice, two slices of Irish stone-ground Wholewheat bread, butter, orange marmalade, milk, utensils, napkins and of course the full hot Irish breakfast. You can see everything properly below. The lid of the box is designed to tear off so you can use it as a place mat. It makes for a clean place to rest your bread once you’ve spread it with the butter or marmalade. The hot breakfast contains 454 calories, but you can see it does contain quite a fair bit of fat and salt. That’s because it has a slice of bacon, two sausages, black pudding, white pudding, a slice of tomato and two potato medallions. See? Aer Lingus don’t provide tomato sauce / ketchup, so I’ve started bringing my own. It makes the best economy class breakfast even better in my eyes. I started by drinking half the orange juice, then ate the two slices of bread with orange marmalade. Next, I wolfed down the hot Irish Breakfast, trying to slow down and enjoy it, with partial success. Yum, yum, yum! Afterwards, the crew collected the rubbish and we landed in Amsterdam on time.

Overall Thoughts

In my eyes, the Aer Lingus Irish Breakfast is hands down the best economy class breakfast in the sky. And I’m not even Irish, so there’s no cultural bias here!

You do need to be a bit of a whiz at Tetris to eat it though as the confined space makes it a little challenging, what with the box lid detached and all. I think it holds it own and is as good as some business class breakfasts.

Speaking of that, just imagine what a proper plated version would be like, if it was served on Aer Lingus’ transatlantic services? It’s not though, as they tend to do a lighter breakfast before landing in J.

What say you? Does Aer Lingus have the best economy class breakfast in the sky? Or can you tell me an airline that does it better? It can be food for purchase or not, but I am curious. Thank you for reading and please leave any comments or questions below.

    1. I’m pretty certain they don’t load new catering for each return flight. I imagine it’s one set of catering for the first four flights of the day, so the aircraft had probably already done two early morning flights and mine was the last, because after that it was post 11am. So I got the last breakfast. That’s my theory anyway!

  1. I still remember the delicious Irish breakfasts I had on my last visit to that wonderful country. We spent 10 days driving around, and starting off the day with a banging breakfast at those lovely Bed and Breakfasts.
    I must visit again soon.

    1. They certainly do know how to do a breakfast in Ireland, that’s for sure! Glad you enjoyed the stay there and you should definitely visit again!

    1. I am quite serious. The Aer Lingus breakfast is really nice. I buy it every time I fly before 11am and really look forward to it. You have to taste it to really understand how good it is. The other thing worth mentioning is consistency. It is always the same, so you don’t get the bad days and good days like other breakfasts. I think it’s probably because it doesn’t contain any egg, which is a good thing, as airlines always screw up egg breakfasts. Thanks for the comment!
