Atlantic City eyes conventions as casinos close

Avatar

Will you be going to Atlantic City soon for a convention? Possibly, if the city has its way, according to a front page story on today’s Philadelphia Inquirer.

“With gambling’s decline, this financially ailing resort city is going after convention business big time,” the Inquirer tells readers.

The city’s hoped-for business stream comes amid the closing of four casinos, which will remove about 4,400 hotel rooms, the story says. The city will have about 13,400 rooms by next month after Showboat, Revel and Trump Plaza close in the coming weeks, the Inquirer says.

The shrinking supply of hotel rooms – a 20% reduction, however, will limit the city’s ability to chase larger conventions, industry experts told the Inquirer.
