Late last year, Amex revamped two of its personal credit cards in the Hilton portfolio. In case you missed out on the changes, you can refer to this post. Amex also introduced higher than usual welcome bonuses on the revamped cards. I’ve carried the Amex Gold card in my wallet for many years now, from the time it had a $95 annual fee. While Amex has gradually increased the annual fee over the last years, they’ve added new benefits and rebates. Amex is currently offering a 90,000 points welcome bonus on the Amex Gold Card. Moreover, I also saw another offer pop up on the Amex Platinum card, which is for 125,000 Membership Rewards points!

With this offer on the Amex Gold Card, you’ll earn a welcome bonus of 90,000 Membership Rewards points after you spend $6,000 in the first 6 months of card membership. Bear in mind that this card carries an annual fee of $250. However, the card is loaded with some really good credits and opportunities to earn membership rewards points.

If the offer doesn’t show up right away, I’d recommend clearing your browsing history and cookies and trying again. You can also try a different browser or a VPN service if the issue persists. I was able to see elevated offers for both the Amex Platinum Card and the Amex Gold card while using a referral link with Safari browser on a Macbook.

Amex Gold Card: EARNING MEMBERSHIP REWARDS POINTS

You can kickstart your points earning by earning bonus points in the following categories:

  • 4x Membership Rewards points for each dollar you spend at restaurants worldwide (includes takeout and delivery in the U.S) and on groceries in the U.S (capped at $25,000 per year)
  • 3x Membership Rewards points for each dollar you spend on flights (directly booking with the airline) or with AmexTravel.com
  • 1x Membership Rewards points for each dollar you spend on all other purchases

CREDITS

In addition to bonus points earned in the above categories, you’ll also get the following credits each year:

  • $10 in Uber cash each month, which you can use for rides or with Uber eats ($120 per year)
  • $10 dining credits per month ($120 per year) when you use your Amex Gold card at one of the following merchants: Grubhub, The Cheesecake Factory, Goldbelly, Wine.com, Milk Bar and Shake Shack

THE PUNDIT’S MANTRA

Overall, this card is a great fit for people who spend primarily in three categories: airlines, dining and groceries. The points add up quickly and if you simply max out the grocery category, you’ll be able to make an additional 100,000 Membership Rewards points in a single year!

American Express Membership Rewards points are an extremely valuable points currency. In my opinion, they offer the widest array of airline transfer partners compared to their peers. Also, the points transfer bonuses that they run every now and then are the icing on the cake.

My favorite use of Amex’s Membership Rewards points is by transferring them to Air Canada Aeroplan and flying their partner airlines worldwide, be it Emirates, Singapore Airlines or Air Vistara.
