70k offer for the Amex Gold Card. Are you targeted?

amex points transfer

Over the last few weeks, we’ve seen banks tighten their belts. We haven’t seen very enticing sign-up bonuses. On the other hand, we’ve seen bank execs talk openly about making it tougher to get credit cards and also offering lower credit limits. However, this latest offer seems to be bucking the trend. Amex is apparently targeting certain customers with a 70k point welcome bonus for their Gold Card.

Amex Gold Card: 70k offer

Doctor of Credit reports that Amex is targeting certain customers with this higher than usual welcome offer. With this offer you’ll earn the 70k bonus on the Gold Card after you spend $4,000 in the first 3 months. Apparently, Amex seems to be sending these out via traditional snail mail. Also, this offer doesn’t have the annual fee waiver for the first year.

Here are the details of the offer:

  • You’ll earn a welcome bonus of 70,000 Membership Rewards points after you spend $4,000 in the first 3 months
  • Annual fee of $250 will be charged and isn’t waived

Benefits and Bonus Points

The Amex Gold Card continues to be my workhorse Amex Card for everyday spend. I’ve carried it in my wallet for over a decade and use it for booking flights, buying groceries and while dining out. I love the most recent change that Amex made to this card. Since a majority of my travel is international in nature, I’m glad that I can now earn 4x points on dining globally and not just in the U.S.

The card also offers a $120 dining/grocery credit with specific merchants, which is split up into monthly installments of $10. If you shop at Boxed.com or use Grubhub, it’s pretty easy to max out the credit each month. The card also offers a $100 airline fee credit, which has increasingly become tougher to use over the years.

The Pundit’s Mantra

If Amex has targeted you for this 70k offer on the Gold Card, it makes complete sense to make use of it. You’re getting an extra 20k points without having to spend more than the requirement for the standard welcome bonus of 50k points, which is usually available via incognito mode.

This travel credit card is one of my favorite hotel credit cards. With this card, you’ll earn a free night each year for simply renewing this card. If you pair it with this limited time offer, you’ll also earn 25% points back on redemptions you make until October 8, 2020.

It’s currently offering a lucrative welcome bonus of 50,000 points!
