What song springs to mind right now? Of course, it’s Johnny Horton’s North to Alaska – “North to Alaska, we’re goin’ north, the rush is on.” It’s a happy day when a new airline joins my alliance and today oneworld welcomes Alaska Airlines to the fold.
Headquartered in Seattle, the airline flies to 120 destinations across four countries, the USA, Mexico, Canada and Costa Rica. Those that like airline lounges will find Alaska Airlines lounges in Anchorage, Seattle, Portland, Los Angeles and New York JFK.
Alaska Airlines Joins oneworld
All day I’ve been looking forward to seeing the alliance logo on the Alaska Airlines website. Nothing this morning, so it was not a midnight changeover. When I finished work, I checked again and there it is!
Let’s Go Shopping!
I’ve been deliberately holding off until today to make some Alaska Airlines bookings. They’ve been planned for a few weeks but I wanted to wait until today.
Overall Thoughts
It’s been some year with virtually nothing happening thanks to the pandemic. Therefore I am clearly a bit too happy at this news, which is probably due to the dearth of good airline news lately.
Regardless, this is excellent news for frequent flyers in the alliance. I’m very much looking forward to taking a bunch of flights with AS, and I’ll be sure to review them too, of course. Right, I’m off to do my flight shopping, so I’ll leave it there!

Is there any chance I can use my American Airlines flight credit to pay for a flight on Alaska?
You would not be able to do that. While they have joined the same alliance and have a relationship when it comes to frequent flyers, they still operate as completely separate businesses in all other respects.
Well, as a DL/WN guy that lives in St. Louis, the news is…middling I guess. Not a real AA buff though I do fly them when it works out for my needs. Not an AA FF member but AS does serve some interesting markets I would like to hit someday (YYJ, JNU to name a couple) so I might sign up for AS FF if the price/timings are right. Rumor has it that AS miles are way more valuable than AA on it’s own so that might be something to consider going forward. Now, to get jetBlue in oneworld, that would be a coup.
Yes, apparently AS have one of the best programmes out there, when it comes to earning and burning miles. Clearly if you don’t live on the west coast, you’re going to have less chance of flying them, but perhaps someday.
