Airplane Inspiration: Delta MD88
In order to keep everyone’s spirits up while most of us are stuck at home, I decided to start a new photography campaign. Airplane Inspiration will be a series of photographs published that showcase an airline/aircraft/airplanes from my photo bank. I encourage you to comment with your own experience with the airline or aircraft. Please share your photos on Instagram and Twitter using the hashtag #airplaneinspiration. I will monitor the hashtag and comment on your photos. Let’s all reminisce about the better times in aviation. We will soon be back in the air, but for now, keep up that #airlineinspiration. Here you have today’s Airline Inspiration: Delta MD88.
Edit: I was told this is a 717, I wanted to pay tribute to the MD88, so I will keep most of the information as is as a tribute.
Location: ATL
I took this photograph a few years ago at Atlanta Airport. Back in those days, the Mad Dogs were Delta’s short-distance workhorse, flying to a variety of destinations around Atlanta and other airports. Since then, Delta has retired the MD88s and MD90s. This signals the end of the McDonnel Douglas era at Delta.
Airline Snapshot: Delta Airlines
Delta Airlines is one of the 4 legacy carriers in the United States. It is a founding member of SkyTeam. Delta has the most international destinations of any US airline (prior to COVID-19). The airline recently retired its MD88 and MD90 fleet, alongside their 777 fleets. While COVID-19 has impacted the airline, I believe that they will rebound and will be a leaner airline after. Delta’s fleet renewal includes A330neos, A350s, and the A220, a majority of which will replace the 777s and the MDs.
Keep up the Inspiration:
If you want to share your photos of the Delta MD88, or if you want to share your experience flying on the Delta MD88, tag your photo on Instagram or Twitter with the hashtag #airlineinspiration. This way, the AvGeek world will stay connected, inspired, and with their eyes on the skies.

Landing Thoughts
I hope this new photo campaign brightens up your day. I know I have been struggling to be on the ground for so long without any clear end in sight. If you want any airline highlighted, feel free to drop the airline/aircraft in the comments. If I have a picture of that aircraft/airline, I will post the photo and a link to your social media too (if you want).
