American Express has been running multiple welcome bonuses off late. I’ve already written about the limited time offers with Delta, Hilton and Marriott. While the co-brand credit card offers are fantastic, I attribute a great deal of value to accumulating Amex’s Membership Rewards points, given the transfer partner choices on offer. I’ve carried one such card, the Amex Gold card in my wallet for many years now, from the time it had a $95 annual fee. The card is a great option if you’re looking to quickly rack up Amex Membership Rewards points.

While Amex has gradually increased the annual fee over the last years on the Amex Gold Card, they’ve added new benefits and rebates. Amex is currently offering a 90,000 points welcome bonus on the Amex Gold Card.

You’ll only need to spend $1,000 each month to earn the welcome bonus

With this offer on the Amex Gold Card, you’ll earn a welcome bonus of 90,000 Membership Rewards points after you spend $6,000 in the first 6 months of card membership. Bear in mind that this card carries an annual fee of $250. However, the card is loaded with some really good credits and opportunities to earn membership rewards points.

If the offer doesn’t show up right away, I’d recommend clearing your browsing history and cookies and trying again. You can also try a different browser or a VPN service if the issue persists. I was able to see elevated offers for the Amex Gold card while using a referral link with Chrome browser on a Macbook.

AMEX GOLD CARD: EARNING MEMBERSHIP REWARDS POINTS

In 2019, I transferred my Amex points to Delta at a 1:1 ratio for our trip to Colombia

You can kickstart your points earning by earning bonus points in the following categories:

  • 4x Membership Rewards points for each dollar you spend at restaurants worldwide (includes takeout and delivery in the U.S) and on groceries in the U.S (capped at $25,000 per year)
  • 3x Membership Rewards points for each dollar you spend on flights (directly booking with the airline) or with AmexTravel.com
  • 1x Membership Rewards points for each dollar you spend on all other purchases

CREDITS

In addition to bonus points earned in the above categories, you’ll also get the following credits each year:

  • $10 in Uber cash each month, which you can use for rides or with Uber eats ($120 per year)
  • $10 dining credits per month ($120 per year) when you use your Amex Gold card at one of the following merchants: Grubhub, The Cheesecake Factory, Goldbelly, Wine.com, Milk Bar and Shake Shack

Amex’s terms and conditions apply to this offer.

You may not be eligible to receive a welcome offer if you have or have had this Card the Premier Rewards Gold Card, the Platinum Card®, the Platinum Card® from American Express Exclusively for Charles Schwab, the Platinum Card® from American Express Exclusively for Morgan Stanley or previous versions of these Cards.

Many in our hobby dub this as the ‘once in a lifetime rule’. However, we’ve seen data points where Amex has approved people after 7 years since they’ve had the card.

You can earn 90,000 Membership Rewards® points after you spend $6,000 (the “Threshold Amount”) or more in eligible purchases on your American Express® Gold Card within the first 6 months of American Express® Gold Card Membership starting from the date that your account is opened.

You can transfer your points to Singapore Airlines at a 1:1 ratio and fly to Malaysia
For most people, this minimum spend is pretty easy to meet, as you only need to spend $1,000 each month.

THE PUNDIT’S MANTRA

Overall, this card is a great fit for people who spend primarily in three categories: airlines, dining and groceries. The points add up quickly and if you simply max out the grocery category, you’ll be able to make an additional 100,000 Membership Rewards points in a single year!

American Express Membership Rewards points are an extremely valuable points currency. In my opinion, they offer the widest array of airline transfer partners compared to their peers. Also, the points transfer bonuses that they run every now and then are the icing on the cake.

My favorite use of Amex’s Membership Rewards points is by transferring them to Air Canada Aeroplan and flying their partner airlines worldwide, be it Emirates, Singapore Airlines or Air Vistara.
