In our hobby, we talk a lot about strategies and tactics when it comes to maximizing welcome bonuses and using our miles and points astutely. However, we can only gain access to the best options in the market if we have a good credit score. If you want to go for the best credit cards, you need to be tracking your credit score keenly. I got an email from American Express and I was frankly, taken aback. The email was about a decrease in credit limit.
Amex Slashed Credit Limit by over 90%
Here’s the text of the email I received from American Express.
We’re reaching out to you because there’s been a change to the credit limit on your account referenced above and we wanted to let you know as soon as possible. After a recent review, your credit limit has been reduced to $1,000.00. The cash advance limit is $200.00.
The card in question here is the Amex Everyday Preferred Card. In my 14 years of history with American Express, this is the first time I saw something like this pop up. While I’m surprised, it’s not that big a deal as I still have other cards that I can work with.
However, what left me bemused was the fact that it was such a massive reduction in credit limit, from $15,000 to $1,000. I understand the rationale for the change. I have barely been using the card for the last couple of years. However, I’m still surprised by the quantum of reduction.
Option to Review
At the end of the email, there was an option to review the decision, if I wished to.
If you would like us to review your decision
You can log into your account at https://go.amex/ZRfNC3 to provide us additional information or give us a call at the number on the back of your Card. You have until April 6, 2025 to request that we reevaluate this decision.
* If you don’t have an online Card account, you can easily set one up by navigating to the American Express website here.

The Pundit’s Mantra
While this is not ideal, it’s not a big deal, since I have other card products to work with. If you have multiple cards from an issuer, I’d advise that you keep spending on some of the less active cards every now and then.
Also, bear in mind that the Amex Everyday card and the Amex Everyday Preferred cards are no longer available on the American Express website for new applicants.

Maybe they’re doing this because of the recent 10% interest cap proposed ? Is it a wider spread thing?
