Volaris and Hainan Airlines announce strategic partnership aimed at enhancing air connectivity between Mexico and China. The partnership is set to commence in the second half of 2025, pending regulatory approval. The agreement will enable Hainan Airlines passengers to access over 50 destinations within Mexico through Volaris’s extensive domestic network. This collaboration is poised to facilitate increased tourism and business travel between the two nations.

Connections and Routes

Under the proposed codeshare agreement, Hainan Airlines customers will be able to book flights to numerous Mexican cities via Mexico City International Airport (MEX) and Tijuana International Airport (TIJ). From these hubs, passengers can connect seamlessly to Volaris’s domestic routes. Volaris encompasses a wide array of destinations across Mexico. This integrated booking system is designed to streamline the travel experience, allowing for a single reservation covering both segments.

Potential Expansion and New Partnerships

This alliance marks a significant milestone for Volaris, representing its first partnership with a Chinese carrier and potentially paving the way for further collaborations. Given Hainan Airlines’ expansive network, there is potential for the partnership to evolve into a reciprocal arrangement, offering Mexican travelers enhanced access to international destinations. Additionally, Volaris’s existing codeshare agreements with airlines such as Frontier and Iberia suggest a strategic intent to broaden its international reach, which could lead to further partnerships connectivity in the future.

Conrado’s Thoughts

This is a really interesting partnership. I would not have expected Hainan Airlines, a full service carrier, to announce a partnership with a ULCC. That being said, there aren’t many carriers in Mexico with big networks as Volaris (Aeromexico already partners with China Southern and China Eastern). It is also not their first partnership. They already partner with Iberia. Partnerships between a full service and a low cost carrier in Latin America already exist such as American and JetSmart. We’ll have to wait and see how extensive this strategic partnership is, and whether loyalty integration and premium services cross over.
