Villa Copenhagen Hotel Review

Takeoff To Travel

Background

For my trip to Copenhagen, I booked a stay at the Villa Copenhagen. Originally opened as the Central Post & Telegraph Head Office back in 1912, it debuted in 2020 as a luxury hotel, Villa Copenhagen. I was instantly attracted to the hotel as its beautiful lobby area looked unique and very aesthetically pleasing.

I work with a travel agency, Fora Travel, and can assist in booking hotel stays. Fora is part of Preferred Platinum & Virtuoso. This partnership gives you special perks when booking with me. Bookings with Villa Copenhagen can come with the following:

Takeoff Points

Pros: Nicely appointed rooms, cute outdoor pool area, stunning lobby.
Cons: Breakfast is not quite at a five-star level, and lead-in room categories are tight.
Takeoff Point: The new Villa Copenhagen shines with its fresh rooms, beautiful lobby, and central location. Rooms are a bit on the smaller side, and the breakfast offering could be a bit better.

Arrival

Since the Villa Copenhagen is right in front of the Copenhagen Central Station, we took an easy 15-minute train ride from the airport. It was only about 5 USD per person, and the train was very clean. We climbed up the stairs, and there the hotel was just right in front! It’s so convenient, and the hotel even has a train board at the entrance to the lobby to show you the time of the next trains.

The lobby is stunning, with the jewels and the glass ceiling. Reception is to the left, with a “self check-in” area in the middle and a concierge desk to the right. The “self check-in” wasn’t being utilized during my 9 pm arrival, so we were checked in at the reception. The receptionist in training was friendly and even escorted us to the elevators.

Heading to the Room

Our room was located on the first floor (second floor for those from the U.S.), and our Standard room category did not have a connecting option, but the hotel was nice enough to put us side by side. Villa Copenhagen features 390 rooms and suites.

The hallways were nicely appointed and felt very luxurious.

Standard Room at Villa Copenhagen

The website states that Standard Rooms start at 183 square feet (17m2).

Once you enter the room, to the right is a bathroom with a sliding door.

The bathroom itself was small, but adequately designed.

Bathroom

I would say the negative was the small basin for the sink, and water sometimes splashed a lot from the sink. There was some limited counter space, but also a shelf where you can put items. Two water glasses were provided, as well as cotton buds and cotton pads. I was surprised there was no shower cap. Then there was a small stool next to the toilet area.

And it featured a walk-in shower thankfully the design was decent and the doors were these two normal doors rather than half walls that a lot of European hotels have so it made sure that flooding wasn’t too bad and the shower ground area was a bit lower than the bathroom to also hold the water and not have it flooded into the bathroom the shower itself had a large rainfall as well as a wand, which was nice.

Toiletries were provided by SKANDINAVISK, and it was a very nice scent. I actually did enjoy these toilet trees. This was a Danish company, so also cool that they were using a local company.  The sun was an aloe vera mix with pine needles and for cones, birch sap, and Woodland Lily of the valley.

The Room

To the left was the closet space, and there was a hanger with an umbrella. If you open the closet, it is actually not very deep and only has five hangers total. There was also a steamer provided.

Then there was more of an open-air closet where you could hang clothes, put a small bag on this shelf, and three drawers.

One of the drawers provided slippers. The slippers did not seem single-use use and they were plastic, so I assume they were just for the duration of your stay. The slippers are more designed for going to the pool rather than lounging in the room.

There was a shoe mitt provided as well. Then there was a safe, hot water kettle, as well as laundry service and dry cleaning if you wanted to pay for that service. Also, two robes were provided.

Heading into the main room, it was a pretty tight squeeze, though there were very high ceilings, which made the room more spacious.

The bed would be larger than a normal queen-size bed in the US, though smaller than a king. Even though it was just me, they had two separate comforters, which I actually did not mind, but it’s perfect for two people. Each side had a nightstand with a lamp, USB, a charging as well as light controls, and a power outlet. Each side contained a nightstand as well. The bed was comfortable and I got a solid night’s rest. There is a small desk with a cute little mirror as well as a chair. There is also a nice Bluetooth speaker from the company JAYS, which is hung on the wall and can provide nice ambient music if you connect to it.

There’s a television and also a council that has the mini bar items for purchase, including trail mix, wine, potato chips, and there was also a fridge with alcohol, alcoholic beverages, candy bars, energy drinks, and sodas.

The room overlooked the plaza with an office building in front, and it was very peaceful and relatively quiet. I know some other rooms looked towards the train tracks, so I much prefer this plaza view.

Overall, the room felt pretty clean and modern, though it was a bit tight since I was alone in this room. I had no issues, but it did feel a little closer to a cruise ship cabin than a normal hotel room.

The AC unit was pretty quiet and also worked relatively well. Normally, I like to sleep with a little bit more white noise, but this did the trick, and the soundproofing was not too bad.

Breakfast

The breakfast was served on floor-1, and even though it seemed like a basement, there was still a nice outdoor courtyard. Hours were from 7 am to 11 am daily.

The breakfast spread was decent, though it never varied from day to day, so by day four, I was a bit tired of it.

You essentially check in at the host desk, they jot down your room number, then you find your own seat, and there is no table service. I wished they provided a bit more of a restaurant-style experience. My other stays at luxury properties in Scandinavia did have some sort of buffet aspect along with traditional restaurant-style service with regard to coffee/tea & some special a la carte dishes.

The breakfast space was quite large, so even though it was bustling with guests, there was plenty of seating from the main restaurant, the courtyard, as well as a conference room that they opened up.

There were two buffet spreads on each side of the restaurant that served duplicate items. Though the one at the back had an egg station that allowed you to order omelets (Ham & Cheese, Vegetarian) or eggs any style. The vegetarian became my go-to during the stay.

The buffet spread included hot items like sausage, scrambled eggs, bacon, mushrooms & bell peppers. There were about five pastries (Croissant, Pain au Chocolate, Cardamon Buns, Cinnamon Buns & Berliners). Cold cuts were available as well as some fruits.

Tea and coffee stations were available, and I did like how they had the nice clay tea pots with loose leaf that you could make. Though they only had 3 juices, I wish there were more variety.

Overall, the breakfast was pretty decent, though I just expected a bit more.

Amenities

The hotel offers a small fitness center next to the pool entrance. I thought a hotel of this size would have a bit of a bigger fitness center.

The main star of the Villa Copenhagen is the outdoor heated rooftop pool. It’s open until 10 pm (11 pm on weekends) and also features a sauna. Children are welcome til 7 pm daily.

It was cool that on Saturday evenings in the summer, Tivoli (the theme park) has a fireworks show at 11:30 pm, and you can see them from the pool deck.

Dining at Villa Copenhagen

Rug Bakery is a bakery by morning, and transforms throughout the day to a mix of pizzas, wines, cocktails, and music taking over later.

The Courtyard Bar is the lobby restaurant and is open all day (7:30 am to 12 am on weekends/2 am on weekends). You can enjoy light meals, coffee, and cocktails.

T37 is a Nordic Cocktail & Wine Bar serving light bites & drinks, open in the evenings only.

The Verdict

Overall, Villa Copenhagen provided a solid stay to explore the city for the first time. The location at the central station and across the street from Tivoli makes it pretty convenient, and the new rooms provide for a luxurious stay. Though the lead-in category rooms are a bit tight, so if one is used to extra space, they might want to upgrade to a larger room category.
