You may have noticed that I’m somewhat into cruising. 🙂 Honestly, I often wonder if my career aspirations would’ve turned out differently had I been taken to the seaport instead of the airport for a tour at age 6! As great as sailing on today’s floating hotels is, I can only imagine what it was like back in the day of great oceanliners like the SS United States. It’s a shame to watch something so great turn into a pile of rust.

A Final Thought for Now: Miles, Points, and Change

Hi Marshall-
Thanks for sharing this video…I actually went and saw the ship this morning as I had some time to kill in Philadelphia. You can actually get pretty close to her by driving by and parking in the shopping center across the street. Unfortunately you can also see how worn she looks. However she is still pretty impressive in size and even a little majestic. Like you I’ve primarily been an airline/aviation guy but have had a secondary interest in some of the big ships so it was good to see the SS United States in person since so many of the others from that era are gone. Ironically the first time I saw the ship was in footage from a really cheesy Disney film called Bon Voyage…some good shots of the ship departing New York.
Anyway, enough of the babble…thanks again for all the interesting tidbits you put into your blog.
Thanks for stopping by East Coast. I’m envious that you got to check out the SS United States!
