The most common valuation of WestJet points is 1 point is 1 cent. That is equivalent to 100 WestJet Points = $1. For most people, that will be the value of their points, however, there are instances where the value can be higher than the public value, but also, many instances where the value can be drastically lower.
Member Exclusive Fares
WestJet was once very famous for their Member Exclusive fares, providing 12,500 WestJet points (or at that time, $125 WestJet Dollar) redemptions across their domestic network with very generous availability. It was not unusual to gain an outsized value on your redemption points. However, their current program still has slightly better valuation, but nothing similar to what history showed us.
For this example, I am going to take the following routes over different dates:
- Vancouver to Toronto
- Toronto to Calgary
- Calgary to London
For each of these dates, I will be looking at three different dates; peak Christmas travel, long weekend in February and a regular day in November.
Some basic criteria:
- Member Exclusive Fares book into Standard. That will be used for comparison.
- If WestJet flies multiple flights a day, I will select the cheapest flight for that particular day.
- I will use the following three date criteria:
- A random date in November, and,
- A Christmas vacation in December, and,
- A trip in February long weekend.

As you can observe, WestJet points rarely exceed the value of 1.1 cent per point. That is 100 points will rarely be better than $1.10 in savings. That is assuming you will always buy Standard fares. However, in many instances, for those who collect WestJet points, the value proposition of Standard fares might be limited as many of the perks you get with holding a credit card, supplement the issues with purchasing an UltraBasic ticket.
Travel Agent Discounts
WestJet is one of the few airlines where online travel agents make their discount fares visible to the public. While many airlines have this feature, most of them, are very careful to now allow travel agents to make it public. I have written about this previously in my saving money series of articles.
For many people, the travel agent discounts might mean your WestJet points are valued even lower than 1 cent per point, which is the published value. Even customers who have bought WestJet gift cards from Costco (no longer available) share the struggle of redeeming them when the fares with online travel agents are cheaper than the published fare on the website.
Conclusion
Let’s state the obvious, the maximum value of your WestJet points top out at 1.10 cent per point. Significantly lower than the valuation of Aeroplan Points. This also plays out in earning points through their credit card partners. WestJet tends to earn 50% more points for the same dollar spent, to reflect the lower valuation. However, for most consumers, their valuation might be even lower than that if they choose to purchase with an online travel agent.
