The last few weeks have been tough for the aviation industry, with the horrific Air India crash and the Delta incident last week, just to name a few. On July 25, a United flight was involved in an incident as well. The pilot issued a mayday call call after an engine failure. The flight had to be eventually diverted.
United Flight diverted after engine failure
United Flight took off on the night of July 25th from Washington Dulles Airport, en route Munich, Germany. As per USA Today, an engine failure was detected and the pilot had to immediately issue a mayday call. The aircraft was a Boeing 787. Thankfully, the plane landed back safely after the diversion.
United Flight 108 had just taken off for its journey to Munich at around 6 p.m. As the Boeing 787 was ascending to 10,000 feet, its pilot told air traffic control, “Engine failure, left engine, United 108 declaring an emergency. Mayday, mayday, mayday,” according to an audio recording.
Air traffic control asked the pilot if the aircraft could make its “way back into the field” by turning right. “There’s nobody between you and the field,” the air traffic controller said in the recording.
“The plane landed safely, was checked by Airports Authority Fire and Rescue personnel then towed to a gate,” Crystal Nosal, an airport spokesperson, told USA TODAY. “There was no disruption to other flights.”
The Pundit’s Mantra
Thankfully, all 219 passengers and 11 crew members were able to deplane without any injuries. United canceled the flight and made alternative travel arrangements for the passengers on board.
