Warning! Watch out for your seats when Turkish Airlines have a schedule change

There is a downside when booking airline tickets very far in advance. The chances of a schedule change are a lot higher. Some airlines (looking at you American Airlines) are notorious for amending flight times, others not so much.

Throughout all my years of flying, I have not really had many schedule changes. You receive the e-mail from the airline noting your flight has changed and most of the time you just click the button to accept it. Job done!

Turkish Airlines Schedule Change

Recently I had a schedule change on a ticket booked with Turkish Airlines. One of the codeshare flights in the ticket changed, departing 10 minutes earlier and arriving 30 minutes earlier. This suited me as it provided less time on one connection and more where I needed it, so I accepted the change.

Two weeks later, I decided to check to see how much a change in date would be. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that all my selected seats had fallen out of the booking. Now that has never happened on any other airline I’ve flown before so it was most unexpected. Luckily all my original seats were still available so I put myself back where I wanted to be.

Overall Thoughts

The moral of the story is, be careful when there is a schedule change with Turkish Airlines. Make sure that once you accept the change, to go back into your booking and ensure your pre-assigned seats are still there.

Knowing how particular people are about seating, it’s surprising that the seats fall off after a change like this. But, every airline is different and this is another data point for frequent flyers.

  1. This is very typical for Turkish. You are very lucky the website allowed you back in to reclaim seat assignments. I have also received messages that “your seats have changed for operational reasons” only to find out they were still available. Horrible, amateurish, website that only works for an original booking.

    1. It was certainly a surprise to me! I’ve never flown TK before, so I had no idea this was a thing. Any other airline where this has happened has never impacted the seat assignments at all. On this one, every single seat on every flight dropped the seats. Remarkable!! Thanks for sharing that, so I know it’s no anomaly.
