When it comes to premium credit cards, several credits cards offer one common benefit. Thanks to that benefit, many of us are enrolled into programs like TSA Pre check and Global Entry. These premium credit cards make the deal simple for us by offering rebates that pay for these programs, in turn making our travel smoother and faster. However, multiple media entities are reporting that the Department of Homeland Security has temporarily suspended Global Entry and TSA Pre Check due to the current partial shut down of the US government.

Multiple media outlets are reporting that starting 6 AM ET on February 22, the Department of Homeland Security is going to pause programs like TSA Pre-check and Global Entry. As per NPR, Secretary of the DHS Kristi Noem put out a statement saying that the DHS was pausing  programs offering special privileges owing to the current partial government shutdown, in order to streamline operations for all travelers.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said in a statement that “shutdowns have serious real world consequences.” She also said that “TSA and CBP are prioritizing the general traveling population at our airports and ports of entry and suspending courtesy and special privilege escorts.”

On the other hand, Democrats have accused the DHS and the current administration of kneecapping programs that benefit Americans who travel frequently.

Democrats on the House Committee on Homeland Security criticized the decision about airport security.

They said on social media that the administration was “kneecapping the programs that make travel smoother and secure” and accused them of “ruining your travel on purpose.”

The Pundit’s Mantra

While the political bickering will continue, frequent travelers are about to face the brunt of this pause, with longer wait times as more people are bunched together. Depending on your political outlook, you may see one side see this as a necessary measure to cut programs that are considered ‘privilege’ programs. On the other hand, others might just see as a pressure tactic to blame the other side for inconvenience caused to frequent travelers.

  1. Douchebag move from Secretary Kardashian. Not surprising as none of the things she claims is ever remotely close to the truth.
