The Trump administration announced a complete ban on immigration from 19 countries. However, this new travel ban includes all types of immigration from countries on the list. It isn’t just restricted to green card or naturalization applications.

New Trump Travel Ban

As per CNBC, the list of countries includes countries like Afghanistan and Somalia, countries that have been at the center of President Trump’s rhetoric over the last few days.

Trump has also stepped up rhetoric against Somalis in recent days, calling them “garbage” and saying “we don’t want them in our country.”

As per the official memorandum, the reason for the extended travel ban lists the recent incident in which US national guard members were attacked last week. Authorities arrested a man from Afghanistan, who is currently the prime suspect.

If you look at the list of countries, then you’ll see that they’re primarily countries in West Asia and Africa.

The list of countries targeted in Wednesday’s memorandum includes Afghanistan, Burma, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen, which were subjected to the most severe immigration restrictions in June, including a full suspension on entries with a few exceptions.

Others on the list of 19 countries, which were subjected to partial restrictions in June, are Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela.

One thing to note about this policy is the fact that it also asks for a second review of existing and pending applications as well. Moreover, this is bound to only add to the paperwork and confusion for existing applicants who had followed due process and applied with all the relevant documents.

The new policy places a hold on pending applications and mandates that all immigrants from the list of countries “undergo a thorough re-review process, including a potential interview and, if necessary, a re-interview, to fully assess all national security and public safety threats.”

The Pundit’s Mantra

It’s no surprise that the administration is going after more immigration restrictions, given that it has always been a part of its policy platform since the days of the election. After coming to power, the current administration has touted immigration enforcement as one of its key agendas, even sending federal agents to key US cities.
