Oh no! SuperValu and Aer Lingus are ending their loyalty partnership

Aer Lingus AerClub members have been able to earn Avios by shopping at SuperValu for quite some time. This partnership has been in place almost since the beginning of the frequent flyer programme, actually.

News has just been sent to everyone advising the partnership is now coming to an end. It’s a sad day for those like me who collect Avios this way.

When Does The Partnership End?

The final day to convert your SuperValu Real Rewards points to Avios is Wednesday 18 May 2022. As of the next day, you will no longer be able to transfer points across, so you have been warned.

As one final hurrah, there is a 50% bonus being offered on transfers. That means every Real Rewards point will be worth 1.5 Avios, which is fine enough. They never did return to the heady days of the double and triple bonuses offered at launch, but it is what it is.

What Are We Going To Do Now?

Those Aer Lingus AerClub members wanting to boost their Avios balance would be best to hit the AerClub eStore. I have shopped through the portal a number of times now and you do earn plenty of points by doing so.

When flying, you earn Avios with Aer Lingus and airlines they have a partnership with, namely British Airways and United. There are also other opportunities with hotels, travel, car hire and more. Hell, there’s even the Bank of Ireland credit card if you’re desperate. All the details are on the Irish airline’s website.

Overall Thoughts

It is sad to see the Aer Lingus partnership with SuperValu come to an end. Let’s hope that one of the other supermarket chains in Ireland, such as Dunnes or Tesco, enter the picture. I’d place money on Aldi and Lidl not joining, of course!

Having a look at it, I converted my first points on 2 February 2017 and since then I’ve earned 30,439 Avios from my grocery shopping. Considering the British Airways, Aer Lingus and Iberia redemption tables, I could have used them for both economy class or business class flights.

What do you think of this news? Did you convert your Real Rewards points to Avios? Thank you for reading and if you have any comments or questions, please leave them below.

Absolutely no reason given for this. It will absolutely change my shopping habits. I consciously make the effort to go to SV for at least some of my shopping and then maximise my RR points conversion by only doing it during bonus periods.
I’ll be moving all my shopping to Aldi from May onwards.
