I have often wondered just how many people apply for status match offers. Frequent flyers find some of these quite tempting and after British Airways ruined their programme for me, I took advantage of one myself.
The good people at Air France KLM made an offer to disenfranchised BA flyers and happily they decided to detail just how many people switched to their Flying Blue programme. It makes for some fascinating reading with some interesting numbers.
Status Match offers appear popular!
For this offer, you needed to pay a fee of £99 and the airline reports in three months over 4,000 people took advantage of it. That is a straight £396,000 into the bank for very little effort whatsoever. Virtually everyone – 95% – matched to Gold or higher, getting lounge access benefits straight off the bat.
Overall Thoughts
Considering the fee, the people who jumped are all people who clearly planned to fly and use their newly minted status in Flying Blue. Had it been a free match, no doubt the numbers would have been much higher, however the percentage of people flying would perhaps have been far lower. This was a very smart and timely move from Air France KLM.
Many British Airways frequent flyers are in their final year of status, with an end date of April 2026. Canny carriers will probably be rolling out more status match offers in the new year to attract these people. It will be interesting to see what lies ahead in this area.
What do you think of these figures? Have you ever seen any other numbers when it comes to the success of status match offers? Thank you for reading and if you have any comments or questions, please leave them below.
