The Amex Platinum Card was refreshed and relaunched with much fanfare. Overall, American Express did a decent job of offering a little bit for everyone, especially in the travel, dining and entertainment categories. One of the new elements the American Express introduced post refresh was a brand new ‘mirror finish design.

Amex Platinum Card: Mirror Finish Design
American Express offers different types of Platinum cards.
- The American Express Platinum Card (what many in our hobby call the plain vanilla Platinum)
- The American Express Platinum Card issued in conjunction with Morgan Stanley
- The American Express Platinum Card issued in partnership with Charles Schwab
Over the years, I’ve carried the Charles Schwab Platinum Card in my wallet. I logged into my account and was immediately able to see all the brand new benefits on the Amex Platinum Card. While the new design doesn’t change much for me in terms of my decision to keep or cancel the card, I wanted to give the new design a try.

Oddly enough, when I clicked on Account Services and then headed over to the Replace a Card —-> Change Card Design tab, I couldn’t see the option to select the new ‘mirror finish’ card. I asked customer service via chat and was told that the new design is not available for cardholders who have the Amex Platinum Card via Charles Schwab.
Surely enough, I hopped onto Reddit and that indeed was the case.
The Pundit’s Mantra
While I would’ve loved to have checked out the new design on the card, it doesn’t change much for me in terms of the value proposition of the card.
I love the addition of YouTube to the Digital Entertainment credit. I also like the new dining credits, in addition to the Fine Hotels and Resorts credit, which continues to be one of my favorite benefits on the card.
Based on some threads online, you may still be able to order the new design if you have the Morgan Stanley Amex Platinum Card, but no such luck for Charles Schwab customers.

Customer service told you it was not available, so you went on to Reddit to verify? I didn’t realize they were AmEx’s customer service supervisor.
Also, you put the headline in quotes. I don’t think those words were said to you by customer service in that way.
You can read other comments on this post as well as multiple other data points, in addition to blog posts by other bloggers and you’ll find that it’s pretty clear that the MS and Vanilla versions offer the new design and the Schwab version doesn’t.
If everyone remembers, the same happened with the Charles Schwab platinum card when they launched the art deco cards. The only one available was the original card. Three months after, it was available.
We also get a $200 fee credit if our balances with Schwab are over $ 1 million and the card is free for people who have over $10 million.
Yes! It seems to be a thing with the Schwab branded cards for some reason. Let’s see if the mirror finish card becomes available down the line.
So is it only the Morgan Stanley card or can you get the vanilla AmEx Platinum card with mirror finish
You can get MS and vanilla Platinum Card w mirror finish. only schwab plat clients are out of luck.
Maybe me, but really an article on the finish of a credit card? We are all spending way too much time on this stuff and we all wonder why the airport clubs are full of people with flip flopped feet on tables.
@enoughofthis: Many people were under the impression that customers with all types of platinum cards could order cards with the new design. So, clearly, some people find it useful (if they wanted it) that the Schwab Platinum cards don’t qualify, but the MS cards do.
I ordered mine the same day it came out. Sad that the fee is being raised, im considering keeping it for now until I see all the new perks and benefits added to the card and I want to see how the new card looks. Once I get a good breakthrough of everything and see if it fits me I’ll make the choice of keeping it or just downgrading to the Amex gold
@miguel: that’s a sound strategy. you can also ask for a retention offer when the AF comes up.
Yes, we’re getting ours with the Morgan Stanley version
Yes, available on the MS version but not on Schwab.
The Hotel credits are not even close to a decent deal.
They over charge by alot and give you a little bit back.
Based on my experience, it varies by the market you’re looking for. I’ve found some decent deals, especially while booking internationally.
“onlien” – ever heard of spell check?
This fee is currently USA only
Really? People care about a mirror finish? Do you get better deals on stuff?
There’s no extra cost to order the card with the new design, that’s probably why you will see people try it out.
Too high free
