Japan Airlines have been awarded Skytrax 5 Star status, joining the ten other airlines with the same rating globally. This is a prestigious ranking for the Japanese carrier and well deserved.
This means that both major airlines from Japan are now rated 5 star. Since Japan Airlines is in the oneworld alliance, it is probably high time that I fly on them.
Skytrax 5 Star Airlines
The top airlines in the world should not be too much of a surprise. In alphabetical order they are ANA All Nippon Airways, Asiana Airlines, Cathay Pacific Airways, Etihad Airways, Eva Air, Garuda Indonesia, Hainan Airlines, Japan Airlines, Lufthansa, Qatar Airways and Singapore Airlines.
Across the alliances, this is one airline for SkyTeam (Garuda), three from oneworld (Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines and Qatar Airways), two unaligned (Etihad and Hainan) and the remaining five are from Star Alliance.
Japan Airlines Has Skytrax Best Economy Seat Too!
For the third time in four years, Japan Airlines has been awarded the best economy class seat and considering this is the seat most people would be sitting on, it’s an important award.
Overall Thoughts
Some people regard the Skytrax ratings as something you can basically pay for by having consulting services from the company. I am not in that camp and I think the ratings are a well deserved reflection on the hard work from a carriers employees to get things to a high standard.
You do notice the difference when flying on a 5 star airline, even in economy class. It’s all the little things that elevate the experience as far as I am concerned.

I fly them a lot, in economy class mainly as I use business class for ANA. JAL has a very complicated website and lots of things are in Japanese only. However, the service and quality of food is really good. In terms of economy class seats I agree these are one of the best if not the best seats. SQ has also good seats, but to me JAL by far the best. They deserved it to be 5 star airline. Only I wish they would change their website. E.g. if you reside in US and want to book a ticket from JP to somewhere you need to change your location to JP, which is quite unusual.
I agree with you on the Japan Airlines web site, it’s not particularly friendly for English speakers. I would love to fly them from London to Sydney via Tokyo (and stop along the way) but the web site wouldn’t let me do that last time I tried. Nice to hear the Economy seats are as good as they’re made out to be. Very unusual having to select JP from inside the US to make a booking. They may need a little IT investment from the sounds of it. Thanks for the comment!
too bad they have such poor business class seats on their 787 on the san/nrt/bkk runs
There’s always room for improvement. I do wonder what they will do with those ones! Thanks for the comment.
